Neuropathy: Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Posted by sjhedcon @sjhedcon, Mar 21, 2020

I have loss of feeling in my feet and tingling sensation. My doctor prescribed gabapentin. I read the side effects and decided not to take this med.
Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Hi Laura, I do wonder if side effects might possibly be caused by fillers rather than the drug itself. I have zero knowledge of pharmaceuticals so curious as to whether the manufacturer could play a role. Who manufactures your gabapentin? Mine is made by Amneal; my brother-in-law uses it from another mfg. and has never had any side effects. Helen

Thank you so much for your information. Do you think it is possible that laying in ICU for 6 weeks could have a compression effect on the spine? As I mentioned earlier, I walked in with no feet/Leg issues at all and after leaving ICU cannot walk without assistance from devices. When they tried to stand me up for the first time, I fell to the floor since my feet did not work. Any further ideas would be greatly appreciated. My doctor has not mentioned any alternatives, I feel like he is trying to wash his hands of this. What type of specialist should I see?

You are fortunate, I took it for three weeks and couldn't remember anything. Where I put the laundry, couldn't do my crossword puzzles, and was angry most of the time. I QUIT IT....and just take my INSULIN and my Glucophage and a tiny blood pressure pill LISINOPRIL. AM TRYING the relatively new METANX which is supposed to clean out the veins in the body and flush them out. GABAPENTIN made me forget my own name and a lot of other normal things. I am 76 in a few weeks. WILL JUST LIVE WITH THE HOT SPLASHES OF PAIN in the legs and feet until I find something that works. Had a DOCTOR in the ER tell me the truth, they DO NOT KNOW how to fix anything with late term DIABETES which I have since May of 1995. TWENTY SIX YEARS SOON...it worsens over time. Saw a NEUROLOGIST, he took an MRI of the spine, and gave me GABAPENTIN which I cannot take. Now what? I get everybody is different and responds differently with meds...GUESS that is true...GOOD LUCK...M.,

It took me over the course of a year or more in-order for me to feel anywhere "normal" - I take 1200mg total over the course of the day.

I guess what I'm saying here, is that, at-least in my case it can take months, not weeks, to get used to gabapentin effects to become... tempered.

I am severly allergic to lyrica and gabapentim ( anaphalaxis) for my idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. My friend claims that she gets some relief from lyrica. Is anyone on Cymbalta for IPN?

Cymbalta (duloxetene) was one of the few meds that did work for me a couple years back. However, sadly, it just stopped working. Was taking max dose (120 mg daily) and lost all effectiveness after 6 months. Had to taper off to stop taking, and withdrawal with "brain zaps" was unpleasant. Not horrific, but just unpleasant. For me, I think they tried all options until I was at the point of jumping off a bridge. For now, I am in one late day dose of Tramadol (helps but dose is too small) and gabapentin, which I cannot tolerate more than 900 mg every 24 hrs. Barely helps but I am living with it. I have mentioned in previous posts, there is a very effective a supplement I use, which if I didn't have, I would still probably be at the end of my rope.o But because WebMD does not understand it, they often come back with a rebuttal to my post when I mention that.

About 5 years ago, my primary doc put me on Gabapentin, 100 mg 3 X a day. In two weeks, I was extremely agitated at everything. Could not get along with anyone. My wife of 50 years called the doc and asked about this being a side effect, she knew it wasn't my norm. Yes, it can be the doc replied. I was told right away to taper off over 5 or 6 days. Many meds can affect people in different ways.

I don’t recall what very effective supplement you mentioned and can’t find where you mentioned it. Do you mind sharing again?

Kratom has been what really dampens down the pain for me. If compared to Gabapentin, its like a water gun versus a garden hose when it comes to squelching the pain . And in this case the water gun has much worse side effects . But it's complicated , you have to find a vendor the third party test their product , and you have to use only the unadulterated pure ground up leaf . Unfortunately because it's unregulated , you we'll find that there is a lot of product on the market that you may want to stay away from. you will find a lot of misinformation out there, as the FDA has not researched it. The FDA is trying to win a battle in the Press regarding kratom, but they do not use factual information. If you research the work of the University of Florida pharmacology department, you'll find the real story. I am not trying to be mysterious just telling you that without this product, my neuropathy problem had gone severely undertreated. With whatever type of treatments you receive I wish only the best of success to you.

When I tried Gabapentin in 2020 and again in 2021 it made me a little dizzy and spacey the next day which often did not go away until the afternoon. This was at only 100-200 mg because I have always been sensitive to medications. Just the way God made me. Dizziness is a listed side effect and it did not go away after a month of trying it again the last time so I had to discontinue.
