COVID vaccines and neuropathy

Posted by cue @cue, Feb 15, 2021

I am 85 with small fiber neuropathy that is getting worse. My neurologist thought it would be a good idea for me to wait with the covid vaccine and not be first in line to see how it affected other people with neuropathy. Probably because it is a new technology. Has anyone had a problem with neuropathy after receiving the vaccine? If so, which vaccine?

This publication describe some of the adverse side effects of mRNA vaccines. I did not read or following the references mentioned at the end of the article, which contain 10 pages. I suppose each of them could be a case study.

Hello, interested in experiences of others. I was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy a few weeks after my 2nd Covid vaccine symptoms appeared. Went to Podiatrist as I thought I had some foot issue and never had any neurological issues. The dots were not connected in May 2021, since I went on to get two boosters. 4 jabs in total for Covid.

My diagnosis was confirmed with a neurologist with many labs test (all normal) and the EMG test confirming neuropathy. I am taking many vitamins and use Nerve Regenerator (Electrical Treatment). I have been following a protocol for 6 months and I am afraid it has not improved. No alcohol, no drugs, just painful feet that comes and goes.

Have others experienced a similar condition? Treatments that work? Vaccines in the future? Would appreciate any info others have on this messy situation. Thanks Mike

Hello @rybren and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will notice that I have moved your post into an existing discussion on this topic which you can find here:
- COVID vaccines and neuropathy: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/covid-vaccines-and-neuropathy/

I did this so that you may connect with other members more easily. Did you ever test for COVID? Were you ever positive?

Hello Mike @rybren, I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with @amandajro and others. I'm sorry to hear your neuropathy symptoms started with the COVID vaccine. I've had neuropathy for 20+ years and was fortunate that they were not worsened even though I've had the Pfizer vaccine and boosters. I also had a mild case of COVID after my first COVID booster.

It sounds like you have done a lot of research to find something that helps with the neuropathy. There are a couple of sites that I've found helpful in learning more about my condition:
-- Neuropathy Commons: https://neuropathycommons.org/
-- Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy: https://www.foundationforpn.org/

Do you have any other medical conditions or take any medications that could be a possible association with neuropathy?

I have had no issue with any symptoms of neuropathy until the 2nd Covid shot. No idea where this came from. Obvious the neurological issue can’t be healed with traditional healthcare so the experiments continue. The nothing you can do does not sit well.

Mike,

I'm so sorry you, too, are dealing with this. They NEVER tell the world about those of us who are vaccine injured, and Lord help us if we post anything about this on social media ... accounts are locked down and not usable for a period of time they deem appropriate because we are "spreading misinformation". Yeah, right. Live MY life for just 24 hours and you'll understand why I want to warn others.

I am NOT ANTI-VACCINE. I am ANTI-LIES and EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE.

I had a normal life until I took the first two Moderna COVID jabs. Now I cannot drive, cannot grocery shop, cannot walk without assistance (have gone from a walker to a cane), cannot even get in/out of the tub. NO BOOSTER FOR ME. PERIOD. EVER.

The peripheral neuropathy pain is so bad, I'm having to use Rx CBD/THC gummies just for relief (no, it does not make me high). I was previously taking Gabapentin as prescribed by my doctor, but that made me have horrible brain fog/memory issues and feel horrible with little to no relief from the nerve pain.

I do not know why I am having to walk this path. I guess this is what "walk by faith and not by sight" means. I know God loves me and has a plan for my life ... I just never imagined my life as one of disability.

Dear Rybren! Thanks for your sharing! I have nearly exact same experience every since my 2nd COVID Vax!
Except for arthritis I have always been notably healthy through my 80+ years. The various doctors at my highly regarded Clinic never even thought of possible chronic autoimmune disease! Or Neuropathy! Which thanks to Mayo gang I’m now aware of!
Have no cures to suggest. Just asked my primary doctor to send me back to neurologist!
Best regards!
Donna

Hello all, My heart goes out to each of you! I truly understand, I received a COVID vaccine but it was a different manufacturer. One and a half years ago I developed CIDP post-vaccine. I am also a healthcare provider and I had to retire due to my illness. It has been a very challenging time and I have learned to manage one day at a time. I look back and see that I am improving but it is a very slow process and I probably will never be as I was prior to vaccination. Every other week I receive IgG infusions and that does help for several days! I find that a low sugar and low carb diet helps relieve the symptoms of neuropathy and exercise keeps my muscles strong.. I am sure you all understand that many days you may not feel like exercising but it truly assists in relief of symptoms. One thing that I have found is relaxation and decreasing stress also improves my life. As a retired anesthesia provider I have been doing research on care and treatment of neuropathy and it varies greatly. I have determined that patients need to do what works for them and one treatment protocol does not work for everyone. It is important that you communicate your progress and concerns to your provider, they are also learning how these vaccines can cause illness to us and how to treat acutely and long term. I think it is important for each of us to stay connected to others that have similar experiences, it helps to know we are not alone.

Same for me. I had my neuropathy long before Covid and I have had all the shots, the two initial shots and three booster shots. These shots had no affect on my neuropathy.
