7% and excessive phlegm

Posted by ritapearl @ritapearl, Sep 9, 2022

I have been using 3% saline for years for bronchitis and MAC.I am adjusting to 7% slowly since I had bleeds in the past.I know the positives of bringing up the phlegm but now it never stops. It is making me weak and I am having trouble gaining weight. It seems one step forward and then back

Thanks so much Bill! We see a new physician Oct 31 and I will inquire. We see Dr Patrick Flume at MUSC and would never have known about him if not for this wonderful support group! We were able to listen to the seminar at Kiawah, SC, held early September and shortly after were told the physician in Jax would not be seeing patients in office in the future so it worked out well fir us that we were aware of Dr Flume. We certainly need each other!

you can also try a less acidic saline and then you will probably be able to tolerate the 7%.

7% can definitely cause lung and throat irritation.
But oddly, if you read the prescription info so can levabuterol cause lung irritations. As many have mentioned — airway clearance techniques are so,personal and more of an art than a science. You just have to experiment with eliminating or adding one thing at a time.

I can’t do 7% twice a day or I get bleeds or too much mucus and hyper coughing. But I coat my throat with thick yogurt eliminating the throat irritation before and during nebulizing w 7%. Once a day or every other day.
But it still irritates my lungs and I have to be cautious w it, alternating w the 3%.

WHERE do you get the less acidic saline?
Pulmosol went out of business, but maybe was bought by another company.

PulmoSal did not go out of business. I just ordered some through my pharmacy and i also spoke with the manufacturer who could not understand the rumor about going out of business. It is still available!

I too have trouble getting the mucus out because part of my trachea collapsed years ago. Bronc is my only answer right now.

So frustrating — my pharmacy called the manufacture a month or so ago and told me they went out of business but were bought by another company and they wouldn’t be able to get any for another two months…grrr…

Hope you are correct!!
Have you actually physically gotten it yet?
Thanks

No have not gotten it yet but they told me it was PulmoSal 7% Ph +. That is pretty specific and they knew i did NOT want the generic. As i said i spoke with the manufacturer and he was perplexed about it.

This is their website and information and it appears to be the original manufacturer and not someone new. Perhaps your pharmacist is confused about the brand. Try another pharmacist!

Sue. Things are not good. The antibiotics did not agree with me.I am now using 3 and 7% twice a day for 15 minutes. Also use Albuterol inhaler occasionally. My coughing and wheezing is getting so bad. Today I tried Benzonatate 100mg for it.I spent 10 days in the hospital in July for pneumonia and the flu and I can’t seem to get my strength back.I have shortness of breath.Just started Respatory therapy.Nothing seems to be working.Bronchiectasis and Mac is a killer.

Apologies due to you my friend! We have a tendency to fall in to shorthand here, assuming everyone knows them. Bronch is shorthand for bronchiectasis - sometimes my fingers get tired and I'm too lazy to type it out.
Thanks for the reminder!
Sue
