Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

I did a first 15-minute walk, which is nothing, but carried a recently-rescued cat so consider it weight-bearing exercise as well. I followed with a first-in-too-long-a-while short treadmill session.

I didn't realize I was walking late this afternoon - just following/chasing my grandson around a beautiful park and playground for an hour, I went nearly 3 miles. What a fun way to get my exercise! That was on top of the mile actively cleaning house this morning.

Yesterday was our city-wide yard sale [that included outlying areas]. Forty one households signed up on the map, with others "chiming in" with signs. Not too bad for a town with less than 900 people in the city proper! Got a lot of walking in, including up and down inclines, and perusing treasures. But, I was judicious in what we bought.

Climbing in and out of the truck was not kind to my knees, and several times I simply sat while hubby took a look. But this morning I still did my morning walk in the coolness of the day! Whoo-hoo!

It was such a beautiful day that I got off of my exercise bike and thought it was time that I gave my new (bought last Christmas 😊) Nordic walking sticks. I normally have a difficult time walking any distance so that's where the walking sticks come in. They help me stay upright and keep my balance when walking. I have to admit I didn't go very far - a one mile total walk for 30 minutes. We have a nice walking path along the road into town and it goes right by the old Mantorville Brewery ruins. I took a picture going downhill and then one when I turned around at the bottom of the hill and started my journey home. The Mantorville Brewery ruins are getting a little TLC and restoration and it amazes me after living here since 1978 and venturing into the "cave" once before deciding it wasn't very smart. I thought I would share this article with some historic photos of what it once was.

I want to walk several times a week. I am good at excuses not to! We live on a farm, so at the least I can walk around the farm most days

I haven't seen any posts on this thread for a bit so am reporting in, as it were. I'm in Florida for annual medical stuff and cardiologist noted a best-ever HDL level despite still-high total cholesterol that I'm working on. She thinks just adding the walking is the reason for better HDL tho' I'm also working on dietary changes.

Current walks include those along the Atlantic Coast as I love to see where the Gulf Stream is with respect to the shore (I'm a sailor) and the color change between ocean blue and Gulf Stream indigo or, on some days, lovely deep cobalt.

I have a formerky-stray cat who's willing to walk on a leash so am working with her on sloooow walks interrupted by frequent distractions and detours when butterflies or squirrels catch her attention. They're not exactly aerobic exercise walks but I'm counting them as part of my resolution anyway as even small things can add up to continued improvement. I hope. I also hope everyone else is doing well and seeing new things to appreciate on daily walks. Anyone else checking in?

Good new about your HDL. I continue to walk daily ….a cardio type walk…for a minimum of 2 miles. Same route but I see more people out lately since we have had some beautiful fall like weather here lately. This is the best time of the year in Florida. The other morning at 6:30 it was 43 degrees but no wind.
I was dressed for Alaska. So nice to don the sweaters and hoodies at this time of year.
I never saw a cat on a lease but I had a pure black cat actually cross the road in front of me a couple of days ago…just in time for spooky season.
I have been doing this for so many years now that I literally cannot skip a day no matter the hour.
Walking at any pace is good for body and mind. I like to go out when it is still dark in the morning (with my flashing bracelet). It’s fun to see all the Halloween decorations and lights still lit up, especially the blow up ones that get deflated when the sun comes up.

Keep it up and stay healthy!

@callalloo and @imallears I’m so glad to know that someone is walking!! Good going! And @callaloo, to actually see some results for your efforts! Small, but great! I actually get out everyday, but I have my slow poke dog with me. He hates when I stop to talk but hates to keep going. We don’t get far. I think about 1 1/2 miles is my limit. I used to do 3 miles each day, but …. We’re actually getting ready to go out now, so I’ll wave in your direction!
