Too Much Clotting

Posted by nete59 @nete59, Sep 8, 2022

I have had 3 blood clots in my leg, well when I had a leg) one clot located in my foot couldn’t be removed. I also developed compartment syndrome in the same leg. Surgeons gave me 2 options, either probable lose my life or amputate. I chose amputation just yesterday. Today my hand is blue so they’re thinking another clot plus I have double pneumonia and a left collapsed lung. Finally, a painful chest tube was placed but it’s producing hundreds of cc’s of fluid constantly. I cannot be moved to another hospital. Please, any ideas what’s causing this? I don’t want to lose my hand also.

Gosh, @nete59. That's a lot to take in. They don't know what is causing the blood clots? Did you have COVID?

They have no idea what’s causing them. I have not had Covid, thank God. I still have a chest tube x13 days. It’s draining profusely and I have no idea why my lung is filling with so much fluid. The Dr. finally did a cytology report and another ct scan on the fluid but no results yet. My pulmonologist is coming in tomorrow so maybe he might have the results. They’ve got to do something soon and they say I cannot be moved to another hospital yet. Which would probably be bad anyways because this hospital did the amputation, chest tube etc. Saturday makes 2 horrible weeks I’ve dealt with all this and my body is getting so tired. I am so out of breath I can hardly talk to some of my family on the telephone so they hand up early to save my breath. My Heparin was finally started back and my hand isn’t blue anymore, just the tops of my fingers but it’s slowly fading. I just want some answers and my poor husband is so exhausted.

Nete,

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I clot too much due to a blood disorder and when I had a back injury many years ago, I had pulmonary emboli in my lungs.

I don't know which specialists are working on your case, but I would ask to have a hematologist be consulted. There are different blood disorders that can cause a person to clot too much. Also, sometimes different drugs can cause it. For example, the first thing I was asked was whether or not I was on birth control.

I do know that extended periods of not being mobile can also cause clotting in people that have back, hip, knee injuries and surgeries.

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts. I hope that they figure it out soon.

Thank you so much. My son has asked for a hematology consult. I can’t go for rehab until the chest tube comes out but it’s still drying so much. My Dr.s finally cultured the fluid but no results yet. My surgeon says possibly Monday or Tuesday but they are not ruling out lung cancer now. My oxygen was turned down Sat. morning to see if the spirometer helped with the pneumonia I still have but I was choking so bad. I had 8 nurses from med. surg. floor in my room. Nothing coming up and nothing going back down. Needless to say, the oxygen was turned back up. I know this is going to be a long process and my team is working hard to find answers but mostly for my lung now. I did however get the stitches from my amputation and both legs, well 1 1/2 legs look great. As soon as the chest tube comes out, I can go home for at least 10 days then back for a checkup. Thank you for chatting with me and relieving my mind a bit. God Bless 🌷🌷🌷

Glad to hear they are calling in a hematologist. Amputation is no picnic, but many people recover well and are glad to have the constant problems behind them.
Susan Tyrell, an actress with essential thombocytosis, lost both legs to the disease. She lived for many years after the operation. Thank you for sharing what's going on. It's awful, but I am grateful because we all learn from each other. I hope you have answers soon!
