New to Mayo Bariatric Group: What are your tips for success?
Hi! I’m just beginning the 6 month program for the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass and was hoping to learn more from others that have done the program and gone through it and what the thoughts are and health changes since the surgery was completed.
I may end up with the Sleeve due to scar tissue but won’t know until surgery time … so info on that would be appreciated as well!

Hi I am trying to get reacquainted with the program. I had a few issues that made my wait for surgery longer, than the schedule fills up fast. I am scheduled to have surgery the end of September. I am currently cutting back on food and drinking protein drinks. On Sept 7, I will start my 3 week liquid diet for surgery.
I am nervous and my mind seems blank after reading all the material. My advise is to keep with the program, complete all exercises, talk to insurance, and try to stick to the 6 month plan. Keep in touch with Dr so that you get on surgery schedule. Also try to loose some weight and start a exercise program now. I wish I had followed that advice myself a little better.
Anyway, I’m here to help you in any way I can.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery ! You got this !!!
It is a long journey, but most thing you have to work for are worth the rewards.
Everything you can do prior to any surgery that makes you healthier will make the surgery and recovery easier.
I agree with @liver2007 , any exercise you can do now will help prepare you for surgery . It does not have to be strenuous, something as simple as increase your walking. If your mobility is restricted, find things can do sitting down.
Try chair yoga. Search for "Chair Yoga" on internet and you can find free You Tube videos you can follow at home, some only 15 min in length.
Good luck with your journey
Laurie
Thank you! I am moving more and just met with the exercise person and have work outs to do with bands and then weights and walking !! I appreciate the words of wisdom.
I am 4 months post op… Dr Madera in Phoenix was my surgeon. I was sleeved 9 years ago and then developed acid reflux. The sleeve has a high percentage you will develop Gerd. I would opt for the RNY . It is the best surgery out there for weight loss. A very low percentage of problems
Thank you - I had a bad accident in 2016 and lost my spleen so Dr Hower warned me that he won’t know if I have too much scarring until he goes to do the RNY … I’d too much scarring he’ll have to do the sleeve.
I’ve heard better things about the RNY so I’m alittle worried and bummed.
I appreciate your help and knowledge!
Hope your post op is going well now and no more issue! 🙂 🙂
Please investigate the BPDS (Bilopancreatic diversion with Duodenal switch) as an option if you have over 100 lbs. to lose. I had my surgery 20 years ago and am still maintaining a 200lb. Weight loss. It's a more serious surgery with a higher rate of malabsorption, so it's for those of us who had extreme amounts of weight to lose. You'll need to remember to take your vitamins daily, even 20 years down the road. I know I wouldn't be here today if I didn't have this surgery.
Dr Hower told me I’m not a candidate for that surgery - besides he only does the RNY and Sleeve.
I should lose 150lbs and I would be good after that much weight is gone.
I take vitamins and diabetic meds now Sooooo the vitamin taking would be normal for me. 🙂
Thank you I will look into this more.
Hello everyone, I'm a new employee with the Mayo Clinic, and will be pursuing continuation of my post-operative care with Mayo when I make the move to Rochester, MN in the springtime. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery in September 2019 (Dr. Carmody out of Richmond, VA), and lost 200 lbs, which I have maintained for the last 18 months. I'm glad to be here, appreciate this community, and look forward to supporting and sharing with you all. Cheers!
Welcome to group and great job keeping off 200 lbs.
