Good evening @pamela1111 and welcome to Connect. You have just knocked on the door of a wonderful forum of members which includes patients, caretakers, providers, and mentors. Osteoporosis is one of the most active groups with quite a few discussions within the group.
So...to begin I will answer your first question. Osteoporosis is a condition of aging that causes bones to become weak and brittle. Bone is actually a living tissue that breaks down and rebuilds. When a scan test shows that bone density is becoming depleted and not replaced, then you have Osteoporosis. Before you are actually diagnosed with osteoporosis, you may have a pre-osteoporosis condition called Osteopenia which means your bone density hasn't reached the osteoporosis level yet.
Is there anything else you would like to know about Osteoporosis?
May you have happiness and the causes of happiness.
Chris
Take calcium with vitamin D & magnesium because all three work together to increase bone density. I've also read that ADDING vitamin K, manganese, copper & boron can help improve bone density. I take them in a multiple vitamin & mineral supplement that I get at Costco (Kirkland)

I use Magnesium Glycinate at night because it has the amino acid glycine which has a calming effect on the body and helps with sleep. It also well absorbed in the body. Both Mg citrate and glycinate have anti inflammatory benefits but, beware, it also helps with constipation and may give you a crampy feeling during the day. I would start with a lower than recommended dosage. You also need the combo of vitamin D3 and K2 for bone benefit. Some type of fish oil or omega3 would help too or fish several times a week…the ones higher in omega 3 like salmon and sardines.

I don't take calcium because it bloats me terribly so I try to get as much calcium in food. KAL is a good brand.
I get KAL High absorption Magnesium Glycinate...value size is 240 veg caps. Dosage is 4 per the label but that is
way too much for me and I take 2 nightly around 9 pm if I am home. It can help with restless legs also and believe me, I am very regular lol.

Can calcium supplement rebuild bones in a 69 yr old with osteoporosis?

It is my understanding that you need Vitamin K2 rather than just plain K. Supposedly helps the calcium you take go to the bone, rather than the blood.
Which magnesium? Citrate,?Malate?
