Permanent SIBO due to removal of ileocecal valve
Is there anyone who has no cure options for SIBO due to the removal of the ileocecal valve? If so, how do you minimize possible long term damage to your intestinal tract? Do you find that digestive enzymes, L-Glutamine, Enteragam or any natural supplements aid in a healthier immune system? if so,
please pass along your best advice. Thanks.

Do you get at least monthly b12 injections? It's a medically necessary after your kind of surgery.
Should be b12. Spelling error
Shots needed weekly
Also vitamin d - 50,000 weekly (capsules)
I take Nascobal, the nasal spray and it works as well, if not better, than the monthly injection.
@tiss How and where did you find someone willing to try Rifaximin daily? I have a great specialist and terrible recurring SIBO bc of no ileocecal valve post hemicolectomy but I'm still on antibiotic rotation (year 3).
I have not heard of Nascobal but will ask my dr about it next time I see him. Would be nice to find a b12 med I don't have to go to Drs office once a month for injections.
As far as my GI prescribing long term, daily xifaxan, I guess I just lucked out. He gets it that this SIBO will only be controlled by meds, not cured. I fired my old GI about a year after surgery because he had NO CLUE about SIBO and didn't really believe it exists. I am on Medicare so it costs 800.00 a month. Not what we had expected during retirement. Xifaxan won't be going generic until 2028. I hope I live long enough to pay zip for it!
I’ve failed a few breath tests and they did aspirates as well. I’m a case of permanent SIBO unless someone invents a valve replacement (and this has been the case since the colectomy to rid me of cancer in late 30s…ugh).
If your GI was on east coast I would prob go there. Lol. I’ve been taking 4 antibiotics on a rotating basis for a few years. We test every now and then for C diff. and always come back to more antibiotic fun.
My GI suggested trying some different antibiotics due to cost but I felt terrible on them plus they are systemic unlike xifaxan and you can't take them for long. If you can make it to Tulsa I'll give you my GI's name!

For B12, an Rx from your MD for Cyanocobalamin and you can easily self administer. Cost is inconsequential with GoodRx.
I would be interested in knowing who your GI MD in Tulsa is.
My dr prescribes the b12 and syringes but I'm too chicken to give them to myself. I had a nurse friend who was giving them to me monthly then Covid came along. So I just go to my Drs monthly.
I'll read the article Re herbal therapy. That would be fantastic to find another solution to help keep SIBO away. The cost is ridiculous. The industry is crazy and upside down. Terrible for consumers!
Dr Michael martin. We tried several rounds of xifaxan and other antibiotics and SIBO kept coming back. I don't think he wanted to keep me on it but finally concluded this was the only way for me to stay well as far as SIBO. My guess is that all of us on this thread are unusual cases and require unconventional therapies sometimes. I'm very grateful to that man.
