Before Covid I went 5 times/week some weeks. One hour class. Lately I have done one and the rest either on a Zoom site my school has, or on my own. I also teach a little. It keeps me much healthier, relatively speaking 🙂
I have 7 spinal fractures but I still stand up pretty straight!
Hi @windyshores, You are very admirable. 7 spinal fractures and still stand up! Would you mind to share with me how did you recuperate every time?
@msou
Thank you for putting the time and work into this and sharing it with us. I've spent the past two weeks moving bookcases around and filling them with. I can consider that weight-bearing exercises but need to get back to a system of some sort.
It takes time. I tired PT a couple of times but didn't find one who understood, frankly. I actually spent time in bed where the pain was better. I walked every day and did Quigongs that move breath up my spine. But healing happens naturally. It can be a long, slow, painful process though and I will never be able to lift much weight or open most windows.
ugh I tried PT! I with the edit function was longer-lasting. I make a lot of typos!
Hi @callalloo, I’ve moved my books from the bookshelf into boxes and I know how heavy books are. In order not to overstrain the spine, carry heavy load with upper arm clings to the body is a good tip -- may be you already know.
Hi @windyshores, When you walk, do you walk on the windy shore? I never did any Quigongs. Could you share your experience on Quigongs ? Any doctor ever explained to you about you spine fractures?
I understand how some PTs are. My husband had a twisted shoulder that was so painful. Doc gave him pain killer. Made him dizzy. The PT put him on a machine to stretch his neck muscles up and down so forcefully that it hurt even more. Eventually he relied on massage to recover.
I realize your post was 2 yrs ago but I'm wondering if you stayed on Alendronate (Fosamax)? I am now -2.7 from breast cancer meds and have started weekly Fosamax and dreading any potential side effects and if it will be absorbed enough?? I was given choice of Fosamax or the IV infusion, Relcast but Fosamax seemed to have somewhat fewer side effects. I'm hoping your DEXA numbers have improved - could your share meds you chose if any. Thanks...xoxo
I had no side effects from Fosomax. I do take a low dose 35 mg, not the usual 70 mg. I, too, was worried about side effects so told my doc I wanted the low dose.
My DEXA numbers have improved.
I now work out with a trainer twice a week - weights are pretty heavy.
I was a runner for 30 years - maybe bones just weaken with age - because running/hiking didn’t keep me from getting osteoporosis, and doctors always said walking/running is weight bearing. Or maybe my bones would have been worse without all the running/walking.
Did you need surgery for that? Did it heal over time? And do you mind if I ask what your bones were like when you joined. I mean, did you already HAVE osteoporosis OR were you hoping to prevent it by joining Osteostrong?
Does one have to be hospitalized for a spinal fracture?
