Electrical shocks throughout my body.

Posted by KidWithShocks @braedenl2202, Nov 13, 2019

Hello. I’m not sure if anyone knows what I am talking about but I am hoping that someone does because I am beginning to feel crazy. Every day, I have an electrical sensation feeling throughout my entire body. The only way I can describe it to people is that it feels like I am being shocked by a light switch throughout my entire body. It is very painful, however only lasts from around 5-20 minutes, 1-5 times a day. It’s starting to scare me because my doctor looked at me like I was crazy, and my nurses chuckled when they heard my symptoms. I am going to a neurologist but they cannot fit me in for another month. It’s very painful for me and it has started to come with a red, splotchy rash from my neck down to my legs. If anyone has any idea what this could be and what I can do to surprise the pain, I would really appreciate the advice. And also if anyone else deals with this please tell me because I really am starting to think I am crazy. Thank you!

Hello @cluv and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

Can I ask how long you've been on Zoloft and if you've recently made changes that you are thinking may be causing the electric shock all over your body?

Again, if you are decreasing Zoloft you may have
"brain zaps." This is a common withdrawal symptom.

Some doctors are not aware of the need, for some people, to withdraw very very slowly, over months not weeks.

Hi, I do have Myoclonus/Myoclonic jerks. Sounds just like what you are experiencing, but can't say for sure that's what you are having. It feels just like an electric shock going from my head then through my body, and either an extremity or my head my jerk quickly, like a tic. Happens mostly at rest or trying to sleep. I take medication for this, as it was a reaction to a medication I was on called Reglan. I would definitely ask if myoclonus/myoclonic jerks are what you are experiencing. Good luck, and if they continue laughing or don't take you seriously, then seriously look for another doctor. Prayers for you dear.

Good validation of how dietary changes can help some of us. I was warned at age 16 of arthritis, headaches and other issues resulting from neck injury beginning in middle age. For the last 20 years have had noticeable limited neck mobility; can't turn head further than the front of my shoulder. Yet I can compensate by turning my body. No one notices. A bit noisy , but lucky me it doesn't hurt. Your injury is more severe. At age 16 I was told that by middle age I would have arthritis and headaches as a result, but so far no headaches and the arthritis in my neck is a non issue compared to other areas of my body.
My goal now in life is to figure out how to live as pain free as possible and I have had a major turn around in the last year as a result of blogging on this site and another. Doctors only offer standard treatments which fail many of us.
You are right about helping ourselves by choosing to. You were motivated to sacrifice yummy foods and staying true to that for 20 years is inspiring. Pain is a powerful motivator in giving us the resolve to deny ourselves temporary pleasures like a bowl of ice cream. The brain washing jingle I made up and repeated over and over in the beginning so I could walk away from the candy or cookie jar was, "When will you learn, it's going to make you burn." No need to do that now as the craving is over, my brain no longer sends me signals demanding sweets.

I have them daily but they are more like a seizure. I feel like I have been shocked as you said by an electrical wire, My vision becomes smoky white and I lose my speech and muscle strength and start to fall. I can hear everything that is going on I just cannot stop. This last spring. I started having muscle jerks with these episodes about half the time. I have been averaging about 5 to 10 a day for the last few months. The first part of this episodes of the electrical shock and other symptoms started as a youth. I would have maybe one a month. It felt like I was hyperventilating. The last severe episode with muscle jerks literally threw me to the floor into our cats water pan. I had no warning like the electrical shock feeling that time. I started having the multiple daily episodes in June or July of last year 2021. I went to lay down and I put my left hand down on my bed to lower myself and my arm collapsed and I felt my body shift and excruciating pain and could not breath or swallow for just a little bit. I have found also since then I am having trouble at times swallowing even water. My neurologist think they are seizure related and has given me anti seizure meds. When I continued to have pain in my right leg and back I went to our local orthopedic center and found that I had a compressed bone fracture in my back as well as two herniated discs in my lower back which my doctor said they looked like two dice rolling around in my lower back so from that I gather they are completely separated from my spine. I was scheduled for surgery next week on my back but doctor had to go on emergency medical leave and they have sent me to a neurosurgeon who specializes in brain and back issues including nerve damage.

My family and I think that all my issues might have something to do with a severe electrical shock I received when I was two years old when I got into the oven some way and got my hand into the wires in the oven. This was before they made the solid burners in the oven and they were like the ones you find in heaters. No my mother was not negligent either. She was at the sink next to where I was at at the oven. She had taken a plate off the stove to put in the wash water when I reached up and got a hold of the wires. She immediately grabbed an oven mitt and grabbed the oven unit with one hand and my arm with the other. When she grabbed me it transferred the electricity to her and I passed out. She then was able to pull the unit out of the stove. She said the electricity going through my body literally threw her arm straight out and the electricity shot out her elbow. That was 63 years ago and I should have died but my mom lived to a ripe old age of 94 years 11 months and 21 days

I am about 3 years late so I hope that you have found the cause and have relief by now. I also hope you found a better medical provider who takes you seriously and treats you with the respect you deserve.
I get this feeling quite often and have recently been diagnosed with lupus.

I’m having something similar occur. It’s happened 5 times over the last month every time while I’ve been sleeping.
It started after I had increased my thyroid meds but now it’s occurring after I went back to the original dosing. Thankfully it’s only happened once per night and only for a second or two. But it is very concerning!
My holistic doctor has no idea what may be causing it.
