Rectal Prolapse

Posted by baz @baz, Jul 5, 2022

I need to finally address my rectal prolapse. What are my options? Anyone else with this problem?
Thank you.

Hello @baz and welcome to Mayo Connect. Yes, we do have members who have dealt with this problem. Here is a link to a Connect discussion on this topic, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/i-am-looking-to-discuss-prolapse-bladder-or-any-kind-of-prolapse/. As you can see, members are discussing both rectal and vaginal prolapse here. Just click on the link and you can read what others have posted. I would like to invite @ellen307 to this discussion as she has had surgery for both the vagina prolapse and rectal prolapse.

I see that you said that you are finally going to address this problem. If you care to share more, how long has this been a problem for you? As I assume you are considering surgery, what type of surgery has been recommended?

What kind of surgery did you have for rectal prolapse? I’m trying to get in to see someone at Mayo to go over my options. It’s reached the point of continence so I have to deal with this.

What is the name of this procedure? Did they go in through the stomach or anus? Was it laparoscopic?
Sorry for all the questions but i don’t know anyone else who had this done. Thank you so much.

My surgery was thru the abdominal wallt with 22 staples from belly down
After this procedure I had my vaginal staples back up for prolapse
Rectal prolapse was pulled thru back and staples to back wall inside
Was not done thru anus

Thank you Ellen you have been very helpful. May I ask your age? I am 71 and hope I’m not too old for everything to turn out OK. I’m very fearful of surgery and hospitals.
How old are you?
