Addiction & Recovery - Meet others & come say hi

Welcome to the Addiction & Recovery group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people who live with and understand addiction and the journey of recovery. Together we can learn from each other and share stories about challenges and triumphs, setbacks and the things the keep you on track.

Pull up a chair and connect. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your addiction experience? What helped you on the road to recovery? Got a question, tip or story to share?

Good Morning. Does anyone have any experience withdrawing from Fioricet? I have been taking these pills for over 30 years. I am trying to figure out a way to cut down and stop. I have read that stopping too fast can cause seizures. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Taper off of them with a doctor's help. For me I had to go off of a drug cold turkey since the side effects were horrible.

The most valuable thing I can tell people wanting to get in recovery is that you have to want it more than ANYTHING. you have to be sick & tired of being sick & tired. I went inpatient & it's available to you I suggest that's the route you take. My insurance only wanted to pay for outpatient in the beginning and I sat there and promised the people at the rehab center I would definitely use again I needed someone watching me 24/7 and eventually my insurance gave in and paid for impatient facility and the facility was wonderful because all the counselors were in recovery and they could totally relate to what I was experiencing... If you do go in or out patients ask if the counselors are in recovery. I went to rehab in Feb of 2004.

Amy i think you should get see a therapist for a check up, maybe it has to do with your mental health and i am really sure you will get out of this with the advice and medication to use, when you get the right therapist.

Hello, my name is Pammy, Will you please let me know what support group you moved me too? I'm new to this and a little confused. I needed a schedule to get off Ativan. I've been on it about 13-14 yrs I think at 2 mg 4x a day a total of 8 mg a day. Do I taper one dose at a time or taper all 4 doses in one day?
Kind regards
pamee

@pamee, I didn't move you to a different support group. Please see these discussions to learn from others about tapering off lorazepam (Ativan):

– Has anybody successfully tapered off of lorazepam (Ativan)? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/tapering-off-of-lorazepam-ativan/

Hi Im an addict. Recovering and clean/sober since 6 years ago. I was addicted to opiates, heroine, after Roxy became scarce, and crack/ cocaine. I have been on Suboxone for 6 years and so is my partner and I probably will stay on it forever. I was prescribed opiates for pain since I was 14 (darvocet) by the time I was 35, Oxy was the thing, Long story short by 40 I got clean...Major people in recovery judge and have with people who take prescription meds after they were addicted to a prescription med, and street med, and every drug I could put in my body to escape. The difference I am not taking medicines now to escape or check out. My dosages are low and I actually do not feel anything. I have a routine and it works now for me and I am finally free from self-harm and from the heavy sickness that plagued me and brought me shame; that is what addition is, a disease. I take Vyvanse daily. I am an over eater and food addict- not perfect but trying to work on this. I take Ritilan 10 mg once a day for ADD. I know they are narcotics, possibly "addictive" and others may judge, but Im living my best life, not using street drugs, and it has helped me with depression, chronic pain (endometriosis, restless leg syndrome. I do however have phobias with dentists and its been hard for me to get the work I need done. I also believe Suboxone is messing ups my teeth. would like to talk to others who have perhaps any of what I am putting out there in their story. or any advise, wisdom, thoughts...I was on Gabapentin ( I see there's a forum) and It made me sleep walk and talk, act weird, like a stoned person ( I never like weed-makes me anxious) So I tapered myself off due to the side effects, even though its EXCELLENT for restless leg. So I have insomnia and its really bad. I do not take sleeping pills. I can fall asleep fine but I wake up all the time. I wish there was something for that, believe me I've tried a few things out there, they dont work for me.I feel like I have tried it all.... it made me gain weight not sleeping too. But I try now to not worry so much and plan my days without really appointments, I moved out of the city as well to live a less stressful life. Connecting with nature and art is a salvation indeed..
Addiction of the body to a thing that causes chemical dependance, is a different thing than being an ADDICT. Of course an addict could have an acute addiction or maybe in remission. I am an addict and I must be vigilant daily. With everything I do, with what I say, how I act, treat people, treat myself... So I love working on myself, living too be the best version of me that i I can be, give back to others with service, kindness, honesty, open mindedness, willingness... yes I do go to 12 step meetings, and Im grateful.
