My son is 39 years old and mentally challenged, Help
He has brain injury from birth, lack of oxygen. He is now having many problems just like dementia. Confusion lack of sleep has to be directed to bathroom even though he’s lived here for 19 years. Screams out profanities. This all started 3 years ago and is getting really bad. Can people like him have dementia at his age with his brain injury? Dr is doing an mri of brain in May. I have found in my area that drs want to put a name like “ impulse control disorder” instead of figuring out what is really the problem. 4 drs as of now and the 1 now is finally doing mri! Please help me with answers or where to go for the mentally challenged. My son was always a sweet child. Now I’m living with jeckell and Hyde personality!!!

Always rule out physical changes to your son, before naming him anything. An MRI is very smart to start. My instinct is that something is going on with him physically, that is changing his behavior. Best of luck to you. I feel for you deeply.....Lori Renee

1 ReactionHi, @adah - that sounds very hard living with Jekyll and Hyde personality. Your adult son is very fortunate to have an advocate like you trying to find some answers for his behavior in the last three years and get some answers. The upcoming MRI sounds like a good start.

They may have some thoughts on whether dementia would be possible at his age of 39 with his brain injury due to lack of oxygen from birth and may have other tips or input on where to go for the mentally challenged.
How are you dealing with the confusion, lack of sleep, screaming out profanities and other symptoms he has been experiencing?

I met someone at a religious gathering and was warned ahead of time that that person had it He did scream profanities from out of nowhere. He was talking and then scream an unrelated profanity. Please, has he been checked for that?
