Would like to know the latest findings and treatment for IUD that does not respond to antibiotics.

I’m unable to self cath so I was getting weekly caths with a gentamicin instillation of the bladder. I ended up resistant to orals so I’m on IV now. I wished I lived closer to Mayo but it’s looking like I may have to go there. I’m In Oklahoma and drive 80 mi to the best we have here. It’s been kidney stone related then add in age, diabetes, post-menopausal etc etc it’s a mess down there as I like to joke with my nurse.

My primary says my bladder is way older than my actual age. I asked her if we could 3d print in a new one? She said no unfortunately. Because of all my surgeries I had prolapse which I just had surgery on in December this past year. She gave me two months worth of Macrobid, but last we tested I didn't have an infection after having ecoli the previous week. I have protein in my urine. Always something new to figure out...

There is this lady down the street who told me she has all her original parts which I thought was hilarious considering how many of my original parts I don't have anymore because she was asking me if she should get a hysterectomy (she is 81). I told her not to - I got mine at 40 because I had to.

If you do go to Mayo try to get as much scheduled ahead time as you can - Mayo really has helped me. I have had to make six trips in the last year. I live in Florida and go to MN - the advantage of going to MN is you can see multiple specialties at once if you need to. I have multiple issues though - that is just one of them. Well this will be trip seven next week - as much money as I have spent I could have done a month long tour of Europe. Oh well, I guess I can just call it Tour De Mayo. Health is worth more...

But finding humor is a good thing to remember amid all the chaos so thanks for reminding me to not always think about the medical components of life or you will always be stressed. Humor is really the best medicine, as cliche as that sounds...

I needed a reminder to laugh. I should have gone to Mayo long ago. I decided to not travel. Now it looks grim for any 10 hr trip since I can’t even do 2 hours in a car or plane but if I could you darn tootin I’d be there. It was a 6 mo waiting list last time I checked! All the speakers here are the same booked up to a year ahead. God forbid you Miss an appointment …..
Safe travels M

This may sound silly, so please take it for what it's worth. A male friend had recurring simple (but one sent him to the hospital) UTIs over two years, continually trying a different antibiotic with some, but not great, success. I told him that female friends with similar complaint swear by cranberry juice. He finally saw a top-notch urologist who ruled out anything serious and put him on D-mannose, the primary source for which is, well, cranberries. The D-mannose helps the biofilm lining of the urethra be less hospitable to the bacteria as UTI bacteria are notoriously 'sticky' and attach easily to the tissue. Another win for simple phytochemicals.

I have UTI for many years!!
diet, supplements - UVA-URSI D-mannose, cranberry -that all prevention , but isn’t treatment.
Antibiotics can give temporary relief ! Taking them for long create/ affect kidney disease .
This is worldwide problem when UTI became antibiotic resistance.
It is exist invasive procedure but still it doesn't guarantee complete treatment .
Age, post-menopause women lacking more
estrogen due the Tamoxifen- cancer treatment, diet, genetics - those are most of the factors influence the UTI problem .
Anything new in the world???

I’ve had this problem for over 5 years as an elderly pst-menopausal woman with DM well controlled. I had a complete hysterectomy at age 34 so estrogen lacking. Lots of things add up to chronic UTI that can become resistant which I am right now to oral meds. So I’m on a PICC line IV and fingers crossed it works like the one 2 years ago. I did two weeks of some wicked antibiotics IV and then I was able to take macrobid again until I became resistant. The sad part of this is it’s a worldwide problem with not many answers. I almost flew to the country of Georgia where they still do phage therapy. Now there’s something to Google! Anyway hang in there and find the best urologist in your area. Some my problem is with a tiny kidney stone. They hold infection.

I can say I have similar problem
except that all my parts still with me. Numbers of supplements didn’t help. Antibiotics - temporary relief .
UTI BECAME ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT. I learn that IV and some invasive procedure might help. No garantee though.
You mentioned about phage therapy in Georgia What is it??
Thank you

Phage therapy is using bacteria to kill other bacteria. It was done before penicillin then stopped except for in poor Eastern European countries like Georgia. It’s the last resort for people all over the world who have no other options left due to resistance. You have to fly there at own expense and plan to stay until they figure out by testing what will kill your bacteria. Google phage therapy. A doctor in Texas got special permission to get some phage from that country to use on wounds that would not heal and resistance to antibiotics. It works. Our govt research labs are investigating its use here.

Thank you very much!!
I googled it! Very clear explanation, but still have some draw back.
Actually, I am not quite understand where those bacteria come from !!
But yes, world run out of antibiotic that supposed should treat many serious inflectional decease !
Because antibiotics has been overused and this created resistant.
Hopefully, phage treatment will be legalized soon!
Interesting, where in Georgia this place situated.
Thank you

I have mentioned before and have yesterday posted my UTI journey.
I have UTI a few times per year. Though I do follow all hygiene, diet, precaution, and recommendation , do take the different antibiotics , try supplements ,minerals and herbals (UVA-Ursi, D-mannnose, cranberry juice ) UTI still is reoccurring and bacteria became antibiotic resistance !!!
Went to Urology dr.
Without any discussion, he has scheduled the cystoscopy procedure, that I am very reluctant to do at my advance age .
But as it stays cystoscopy might help to reveal the UTI problem .
Besides, I am taking a hormone therapy Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer or other cancer reoccurrence. Tamoxifen is further depleting the estrogen, that usually helps to fight bacteria .
Now, I wander if any of member here have the procedure done ✅, how it went and how this helped to treat UTI??
Appreciated reply
Thank you 😊

Has anyone had any experience with kidney stones and chronic UTIs ? I can't seem to get rid of either of them no matter what i do. Scheduled for surgery on UPJ soon but I don't know if this will make any difference. I am watching my only good kidney slowly stop functioning. Any help would be appreciated .

I had a UTI that just wouldn't go away. I was on 3 different types of antibiotics for 29 days. I developed C-diff that took 2 months to treat. I was fortunate enough to find a gyno-urologist at Mayo who ran several diagnostics and saw that there was nothing structural going on. I was prescribed 50 mg of Macrobid one time daily for several months. I didn't want to take them that long. I started taking methenamine mandelate (Hiprex) 2 X daily along with 500 mg of Vitamin C which took care of recurrent UTI's. Hiprex is an anti-infective not an antibiotic and has been around a long time. Doctors are returning to this way of reducing bacteria load in the urinary tract and it works quite well.
