Rough Timeline of International Appointment Request

Posted by jordyndill @jordyndill, Jun 9, 2022

Hi everyone!
I live in Canada and have requested an appointment with the Mayo Clinic located in Rochester, Minnesota. I have several underlying health conditions which I explained on my appointment request forms. The International Appointment Office has processed my request and now I am waiting for someone to contact me about scheduling an appointment, any idea how long it will take to hear from someone at this stage? I would like to head down there as soon as possible but did not notice a space to communicate that on the appointment request forms that I have filled out. Will this be assumed or should I contact someone?

Hello @jordyndill, Welcome to Connect. I would not travel to Rochester without first having your appointment setup. I would call or email the International Office at Rochester Mayo Clinic. They should be able to tell you how soon you should hear back.

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota
507-516-1202
Intl.mcr@mayo.edu
Office hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Central time) Monday through Friday

Did the appointment request form give any information on how long to expect a response from the appointment office?

Hi John,
Thank you for your quick response. Your help is much appreciated! After glancing over the forms I do not see an estimated time that I could hear back from the appointment office, not to say that it is not there, I could be something. I will contact the office through the email that you recommend. Thank you!!

@jordyndill Hello. Do you have a physician or medical specialist who will make a referral for you? A referral from a medical provider will speed up the process for reviewing your request for an appointment.

In my case I had a physician referral for endometrial cancer and I had an appointment within a few days as there was no treatment for gynecological cancer where I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In another instance the orthopedics department at my local medical center has a policy of not making referrals. So I filled out an appointment request and send my x-rays to Mayo Clinic Orthopedic Surgery. My case was reviewed and I had an appointment within a few months.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Hi Helen,
Thank you for the information that you shared, it is very helpful! I will look in to getting a physician referral. I hope that you are doing much better. I am wondering if you can answer this question for me too, if you don’t mind. I have a Mayo Clinic patient ID number, does that mean I have in fact been accepted as a patient?

@jordyndill Since you have a Mayo Clinic patient ID number you can create your Patient Online Account. Go to the Mayo Clinic web page and in the upper right hand corner you will see "Log in Patient Account". Check your Appointments and see if any have been set up for you. In my experience Mayo Clinic personnel contacts me by phone before setting up an appointment with a new medical provider.

I don't know if this means that you've been accepted to Mayo Clinic as a patient. I'm going to ask our Connect Director @colleenyoung if she can answer that question for you.

Here's the link to get you started setting up the patient portal for your account:

Once you have the patient portal setup, I would recommend installing the Mayo Clinic app on your smart phone which will allow you access to your appointment and other information.

I don't know how different the process might be for a resident of Canada. I live in Minnesota, and I simply self-referred and called the department I wanted when I had my first concerning x-ray. That was last November, and at that time they told me they were scheduling out two months. They encouraged me to set up an account/Mayo ID which I did. They also said I should send my actual images and not just reports when I had them, and that things can get moved up depending on situations. I sent my CT scan and PET scan one afternoon and the next morning I was called by my future doctor and given an immediate appointment. I had surgery three weeks later. I should add that I have original Medicare, and I have read recently that Mayo not scheduling more Advantage Medicare patients. Also, Mayo Clinic Rochester is busier in the summer months. Be sure to check out all the information on Rochester for where to stay and get around. It is pretty organized. And of course, it is great to use patient portal. Test results are posted immediately, and doctor's notes are really interesting. I can link my local provider MyChart to Mayo MyChart and info goes back and forth. I wonder if you might have similar options.

Thank you for sharing. I have sent my information and medical records to the International Appointment Office and they let me know that a specialist will be reviewing my case. In 2-5 business days I should hear back about when my appointment will be. I hope that I will be able to get in as quickly as you did. It sounds like you have had a great experience with the Mayo Clinic, that is promising! One of my reasons for travelling is that I am not able to have the testing that I need done, done where I live. The disorders/syndromes that it is suspected I have can be life threatening, so, I hope to get answers. The Mayo Clinic came highly recommended. I hope that you are doing well post surgery
