What solutions have you used to eliminate itch created by ear molds or domes on hearing aids?

I use MiraCell Pro Ear skin serum. Just a drop or two in your ear. Does not effect your domes on your hearing aids. I like it very much. Just keep it out of the hearing aid openings. Can be used at bedtime also.

I'm glad to know about this serum, thank you! I've recently been getting irritation in my left ear canal, especially in warm, humid weather, because the dome on that side is now a size large, a switch from the size-medium dome I used to wear (and still do on the right side). I'd been getting a lot of feedback in my left, less-hearing ear, and I thought it maybe came from the shifting of the dome in the ear canal. So I asked my audiologist to try the size large dome in that ear.

The result has been very good for me! I hear much better in my left ear than I ever have, no matter how much I used to turn up the volume on that side, and the feedback has stopped. So it turns out that my two ear canals are not exactly the same size and I guess for 20-some years I'd been fitted less than optimally. Who knew?

For the irritation, which includes itching, I've been applying bacitracin antibiotic ointment at night in that ear. It helps somewhat, but it would be very helpful to use something during the day as well. I'm looking up that serum right away. Thanks again for posting!

My ENT doctor recommended mineral oil….inexpensive. You can buy a good size bottle in any pharmacy and a smaller dropper bottle for applications. I have 2 molds and very dry ears both inner and outer. I put a couple of drops directly into the ear canal at night or every other night and apply some to the outer ear. The ear serum mentioned has a lot of beneficial ingredients but also 2 cosmetic preservatives…phenoxyethanol (which is also a stabilizer in perfume and soap) and methylparaben. Admittedly the percentage is probably small.

My thinking is why should I buy a more expensive solution with numerous ingredients and the possibility of contamination when I can use something minimal. Mineral oil is also used in some cosmetics. I have been using it on the advice of my doctor for many years. Just don’t use it prior to inserting the mold or dome or there won’t be a snug.

My 10 cents (inflation)

I was also told about the mineral oil - use that an sometimes an over the counter bacterial ointment that was also recommended. My left ear (non implant) is the one that gives me fits. Always itchy, flaky or sometimes seems full of fluid.

Hello @arieswoman
From what you said, I get the impression that you use this during the day when your hearing aids are in? Is that correct?

I've just had hearing aids for less than 24 hours now and the itching is distracting for sure. I called the rep who sold me the hearing aids and she said that this brand (dome type) was not hypoallergenic. Are there some that are hypoallergenic?

Just wondering, thanks for all of your words of wisdom.

Yes, I do. I put a drop on my finger tip and rub it inside my ear. Never had a problem with it getting into the hearing aid. Also I have put a couple of drops in at bed time.

I should have said I do this before putting the hearing aid in.

This has always been an issue for me. I had done miracell but that was causing my ears to get too wet and caused issues with my aids. My audiologist recommended I try using cortisone cream. That actually works pretty well without getting my ear canal too wet.

Good to know. I wear bilateral hearing aids with domes and my ears itch all the time, plus I have what I believe ie eczema behind my ears, on the earlobe etc. I was planning on going to the dermatologist.

I have hearing aids behind the ear. They are connected to custom ear molds that fit around the inside of my ear like an open clear plastic semi circular shape. Nothing goes into my ear canal except a small insert that does not block the ear canal so the air can get in hence no moisture, wetness or itching. I love them. I never notice them when I put them on and they aren’t noticeable in terms of appearance at all.
