Hollow echo distortion in ear? Scared

Posted by lissas @lissas, Mar 17, 2021

What is this metallic echo.. hollow in my head?
My ear sounds like there's a actual hollow in my head. Like it's a metal bucket. There's a metallic echo to my own footsteps, tapping teeth, tapping head, male voices, bass sounds.
Anyone else heard of this? It's really frightening to have this develop after a noise damage. ENT has no clue. Please tell me others experience this or know what it is? Thanks!

@txrock, welcome. I'm sorry to hear that you are also experiencing echo distortion similar to @lissas. When did this start and what started it? Have you consulted a specialist?

I think I have had this a long time but, now it is getting more pronounced and noticeable all the time. I do need to see an ENT about it. 2 years ago I saw ENT about burning and itching ears and chronic TMJ was diagnosed

Thank You John! The ENT didnt say if it was permanent but the noise accident occured in March of 2021 and hasen't gotten better so i assume it is permanent. The hearing loss is high frequency, i.e. at 4k hz and above to 70 db. Hearing aids help a little with the hearing loss but im thinking i need more powerfull hearing aids or a custom fitted ear mold to keep the sounds in the ear canal.

Hi Bob @bobchance1, There are some good discussions on hearing aids that you might want to read through to see what others have shared. @julieo4 may also have some suggestions or information for you on selecting a hearing aid.

I had exactly these symptoms a lot last year, for weeks at a time. My GP couldn't help. I was scared. Then one day it would stop for a month or so and then return. No pattern. No cold. I thought maybe it was connected to my polyneuropathy.

I have this too! When I mentioned it to my Neurologist, he couldn't help. It stays for days and weeks on end, then disappears for a while before returning.
My ears have been checked. I am told I do not have a build up of wax or any infection and they look healthy.

I have been searching to see if anyone else has experienced this "metallic echo" phenomenon. I had a sudden hearing loss in my left ear in March 2022 (the left had been my "better" ear up until then). Everything sounds tinny, high-pitched and metallic, and there is a buzz surrounding the sounds, especially noticeable with speech and music.

hi!
Yes, I have had this and they diagnosed it as 'tuba aperta'.
It can go away but it takes time. I still sometimes hear it when i am on the phone, it's a pain and I tend to speak softly in times this flares back up because I hear every single thing inside my head.

...sorry had not answered as some issues with other health problems, and hadn't been on here for a while. Tinnitus is now almost 24/7 ... ENT here wont discuss tinnitus; Neurologist out of town very busy with critical cases has never discussed my tinnitus; am on my own to research and getting caught up on help here, thanks. Two audiologist businesses where I live, but only hearing tests and hearing aids. I had a zoom with audiologist out of town last week explaining not only tinnitus but hyperacusis... with my moderate hearing loss I can get by without hearing aids as spend most of time in my home... but noises at night wake me up and I presume my self diagnosed hyperacusis.... still have eustachian tube disfunction, again the ent wont/cant do anything about it as so many other more serious issues wth other patients; on top of it recurrence of tmj on and off in past, and old age pain! I did read a recent web page where a woman feels she "got" tinnitus having MRI with no hearing protection which reminded me that over the years I have had several/many MRIs of head with NO hearing protection at all.... last time I asked in advance and they gave me foam plugs with padding on outside and so much better but the damage has been done i feel. She has no proof neither do I but thats the only extremely loud noises I can recall in the past. ??? When I enquired was told, oh you get hearing protection when having an MRI well I assured them I had NOT been given any.... so please if this is happening to you, request it...J.
p.s. @fue when they look in my ears all is ok but I have never had wax in them; now my adult daughter confessed to me she has had tinnitus for past six months and doesn't want to discuss it but she also never has wax in ears... could this absence of wax be somehow involved in ear issues...I feel like oiling mine!!!

A ways back I had tin can sound and when I spoke it was like I had speaker in my head. At the time, I was on prednisone and had PMR and had lost lots of weight. I researched and found that sudden weight loss can result in Autophony which is classic, hallmark symptom of a patulous eustachian tube. It is a condition in which you hear unusually loud feedback of your own voice, breathing, and heartbeats. ENT wanted to put in tubes but I just gave it time and eventually it fixed itself.

Thank you. I am not on meds at the moment. I haven't lost much weight. I only hear my teeth sounding different when they meet. I do have problems with my eyes sticking off and on, not every day though. All this started months ago.
I have had the remains of a cold for 31 days now. It was a bad cold (not Covid) but it is still in my sinuses. I am sure it must all be related to neuropathy.

Same is happening to me. I am going mad due to different health issues. I am also having echo in head while walking or if I tap in right temple.
