Anyone taken Evenity (romosozumab) for Osteoporosis?

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, May 27, 2020

Has anyone taken Evenity? I understand it’s only been on the market for a little over a year. I’m hoping it will help with my severe osteoporosis. Any information is helpful.

I have been on Evenity for 6 months. After the first injection I had discomfort at the injection site and generally not feeling well. The Nurse Practitioner recommended taking an antihistamine. I now take Zyrtec one hour before the scheduled injections then each day afterwards for about 5 days. I have not had any side effects since I started taking the Zyrtec. I am expecting good results from this treatment and will report the results when I have completed the 12 month course.

I did speak with my endocrinologist and was advised to speak with my dentist. It seems each doctor has their opinion and it is up to the patient to weigh all the info and decide. You do use it for one year but then you have to move on to a support med or lose the ground you have gained. Landmines no matter what you choose.

@retireed123 Just a thought: My dentist seems to think that all osteoporosis drugs are a problem. I am on Tymlos and the dentist started to caution me about dental problems, and I told him that Tymlos does not cause the same problems as some of the other drugs. He had never heard of Tymlos. I guess it is risky to assume all professionals know everything about other areas of expertise!

I agree. This is the result of unavoidable over specialization of medical professionals. In any case the dentist should provide evidence to support this assumption.

His evidence was his experience he had with his patients on the different osteoporosis drugs. His comments were only on dental health. He did not offer any osteoporosis advice. As @windyshores said, " Dentists are going to protect dental status and bone doctors are going to protect bones!" Just one solution is not for everyone. Many things to consider. No right or wrong, just a difficult decision after a person has considered all of the 'facts'.

@retired123 This is the problem. Dental providers lump all the osteoporosis drugs together and don't realize that not all of them cause dental problems. However, Evenity does suppress turnover to a lesser degree than biphosphonates or Prolia.

The best drugs in the context of dental concerns would, I imagine, be Forteo or Tymlos since they don't suppress turnover and necrosis of the jaw are not a risk with them. (My dentist had never heard of Tymlos but as soon as he heard "osteoporosis med" he had concerns!)

Your dentist has no idea what he is talking about Im sorry. I did extensive research and just finished my Evenity 1 year treatment. If you have osteoporosis you should get on a treatment plan. The risks associated with Osteoporosis far outweigh any potential side effects.

Did your bone density actually increase after taking Evenity? Everyone talks about the short term pains of the shots, but no one discusses whether the Evenity actually improves the bone density readings?

My bone density improved. My strength improved. I always liked the name EVENity and felt I was more even after taking it. Admittedly it is nice to be done with the uncomfortable shots.

how much of an improvement did you see? Can you tell us the actual numbers or how much % improvement did you get? How much strength improvement did you see too? Were you able to lift heavier weights? The official numbers the drug company gives seem like very minor improvements like 10%. I am trying to consider the real benefits considering you are taking on the risks of stroke, etc. Thanks in advance for sharing.
