Is Meniere's disease an autoimmune condition?

@rgbaker Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I certainly understand your need to vent. That’s what we’re here for. The doctors probably don’t want to be positive about meunière’ s disease and its relation to autoimmune because AD’s are still so unknown. I included this article that says that maybe up to 1/3 of cases of meunière’ s diseases are probably related to AD. The article is 10 yrs old so things may have changed.

You said the most of your treatments are working. How are you feeling?

I’m getting the attacks pretty often now. I would give anything to be over this nausea that’s comes with meniers disease . Just had another epoisode two days ago. Down with Dramine is about the only relief now.I’m needing a doctor that knows how to treat meniers disease. It is so hard to find a physician that’s knows what to do for this disease.

I, too, have Meniere’s but not to the extent you have. I keep Bonine handy, but so far am doing better for no discernible reason. I can empathize with your experience.

I think the medical community is still grappling with the categorization of some inflammatory related conditions, including Meniere's Disease. According to the 2012 review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22306860/
"Approximately one-third of Meniere's disease cases seem to be of an autoimmune origin although the immunological mechanisms involved are not clear. The diagnosis of autoimmune inner ear disease is based either on clinical criteria or on a positive response to steroids."

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia two months before my mother died with Alzheimer. It was so hard to recognize myself as even doctors were saying it was all in my head. My rhymotologist was right though. Years later I found out that it isn't an autoimmune disease but still a disease none the less. I would never have thought that there could be such a heinous disease but I was living with terrible constant pain despite doctors not agreeing on the name. Bad days and worse days but never felt like my former self. That Bette had died and this new evil twin was quite lonely as even my husband of 30 years thought my doctor was a quack and I was acting. I had to fight my way through so much that God thought I never stopped praying - and I didn't - as He knew better than me what I was going through. Although I'm not familiar with your disease, I recognize the cry for help. We must hold on. 22 years and still no relief for my case. There are over 150 autoimmune diseases. What a puzzle...
