Controlling Tinnitus: What works for you?
Hello: Has anyone on this site had any luck with controlling tinnitus? I see certain things advertised but always sceptical. Any thoughts/ideas?

I'VE had it for 40 yrs, it varies, it'll drive you nuts if you let it, over time I've blocked it out, never think about it much! Ya get used to it! Stereo on etc, other noises to drown it out! I only notice it when the environment I'm in is QUIET! Most frustrating for me is not being able to understand people when there's background noise!THEN, over time I've gone to not listening to conversations at restaurants etc, then people think I'm stuck up or whatever!
My T has gotten louder in the last six mos. or so...I find being quiet and gentle mediitation outside feeding birds and chipmunks down at my circle. It calms my soul and the noise....at night I listen to the T and let it morph into a natural sound like waves on the beech or maybe wind in the trees...it depends how loud it is....and fall asleep...it is noisiest first thing on waking...so I stay quiet and concentrate on slowing down my heartbeat, talking to the cat, stretching and then slowly get up and get ready for the day....and my big coffee down at my stone circle with the chippies, birds and memories. It always gets worse when I get tense or if I am yelled at...so I avoid these situations and places(if possible)...hope this helps someone. Peace be with you.
My tinnitus started while taking the blood pressure medication; Metoprolol, but of course after reading that it may never go away it didn't matter that my cardiologist switched me to Diltiazem. There has to be a cure for this; some day!
Talking with Dr Neil Baumann and listening to him on our Zoom HLAA Meeting tonight, it is any wonder we all will have tinnitus and an assembly of side effects from all of the toxic medications that are prescribed for us. He has been studying for the past 25 years and has found that it is better to avoid most of them than to take them. His books outline the 640 + drugs that do us injury and may even kill us. Of the top 300 prescription drugs that are prescribed for the 2.9 billion people more than 96% of them are ototoxic or have toxic side effects. The current leaflets given to you do not list the side effects of hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, Menieres disease, etc on them because they are not reported by the physicians (less than 1/25th of 1%) to the FDA. Some of the toxic meds are: Wellbutrin, Cipro, Celexa, Ibuprofen. The top two categories are: Platinum Anti-cancer drugs: Cisplatin and Aminoglycan antibiotic - Gentamycin, Neomycin, Streptomycin, Tobramycin etc. Top Four today that cause OTOTOXICITY to our EARS/BRAIN include: #4 Influenza vaccine - flu shot #3 Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) #2 Ibuprofen (Advil / Motrin) #1 Citalopram (Celexa). For every pill there is a ill and every drug there is a bug.... Best treatment plan is Diet - Exercise and Herbals/Diet supplements from a Neuropathic doctor You can find him on https://hearinglosshelp.com/?p=4745 He has a FREE COPY of his 3rd Edition of the Special Report List of 966 Drugs associated w/Tinnitus available. Check it out today He will help you too if you give him a call. Thank you.
@nurseheadakes Thanks for summing up that meeting. I was there too! It was discouraging to hear that doctors are supposed to report side effects for the drugs that they are prescribing, yet that step is usually not done. You mentioned the figure I heard (less than 1/25th of 1%). Another fact is that I always thought that the drug labeling inside the prescription box listed all possible side effects. That, too, is not correct. Even the Physician's Desk Reference does not list every side effect but I think it's because of the fact that doctors are not reporting back to the FDA. Probably our best line of defense, as you mentioned, is diet and exercise. People need to consider alternative medicines but our doctors do not embrace the practice and insurances do not cover any costs.

You are correct. In my clinical practice - I saw this all 15 years on the cardiac side of nursing. We saw people dropping died all of the time because of drugs and their side effects. They were being used as guinea pigs and the Cardiologist were trying all sorts of drugs for many different reasons - promising miracles for people desperate for healing from heart attacks and cardiac events they caused with their lifestyles as they thought. But in actuality it was the medications that were the actual culprit. I just thought it was me in the beginning in the 1960s, 1970s with all those new cardiac gadgets, meds and things that were going to the moon and back. But the trajectory was to advance mankind to things unimageable and anything was possible and nothing was off the table. As a nurse I saw everything and anything you imagine including the HIV and AIDS epidemic in full swing.
You said "Best treatment plan is Diet – Exercise and Herbals/Diet supplements from a Neuropathic doctor..." For the most part I agree.
However, the best efforts sometimes fail, and there is a place to turn to modern medicine - whether prescription or OTC drugs or surgery. For example, my husband's diabetes did not agree to be controlled by diet and exercise. The potential side effects must be weighed against the benefits of treatment. And it is important to remember that not every person, nor even a majority, suffer most of the idea effects.
And then there is the matter of herbals and supplements - these too are capable of causing serious side effects. And they are unregulated, so when you use them, they can be more or less potent than stated, adulterated, or even contain none of the stated substance. They can also be overprescibed, overused, and subject to interaction with one another. 10 years ago, my sisternearly died from using Naturopath prescribed supplements - got pancreatitis and her kidneys failed. She has never really been healthy since.
So whether one chooses modern medicine, alternative medicine or complementary medicine, it is important to be our own best advocate and manager. (Full disclosure: I carefully use some supplements and herbals in conjunction with my prescription meds.)

I agree. While I respect this Dr - I have lived almost as long as him but respectfully disagree with some of his ideas. I can not simply get off of many of the medications I am taking an find a replacement since they are my lifeline in staying alive. I have gone the route of herbals, etc before but they can not sustain me for the multiple traumas I have had over a my time. Because of ineptness of medical physicians and their mistakes with me, they have given me permanent disabilities that I can not outlive. I micromanage my health with all that is made available to me and use the tools that are available including understanding what works and what doesn't work over time. I keep track of this and work side by side with my physicians so that they know this is a 50/50 agreement. It continues to work without fail given the knowledge that I have participated in medication trials in the past, followed gold standards for treatments, done my own research on drugs and collaborated with all manner of health care professionals. This should be the standard for every consumer of all health care services.
