Side Effects of Metoprolol?

Posted by wigreenthumb @wigreenthumb, Jan 18, 2019

Just started this med for spiking blood pressure in evening. Has anyone experienced severe stomach pain from this, or insomnia? I take with food, and the pain started almost 18 hours later!

Surprisingly, when I told my Cardiologist about my insomnia, he suggested I stop taking the Metoprolol to see if that fixes the insomnia. (Surprising since I’ve read comments on here about people having to wean off of Meto). He also said that if my palpitations and PCVs return, he will start me on a different med (Diltiazem). I will report back late …

@karen1945 Oops, Karen, I didn't mean to imply the name I was listening to was titled "My Bedtime Stories "! What I meant was that I was playing YOUR suggestion of "Bedtime Stories for Adults" at the moment when I was replying to your post, just to see if Echo had it, and it did have it. Sometimes writing instead of talking gets complicated, especially on 4 hours of sleep! Lol.
Now, I'm playing your suggestion of Kevin Kern's piano music. Very nice, and no words to think of either, as we listen to the melodies. I often request "Music for Reading" from Amazon Music and my Echo plays solo classical piano by various pianists. Like you, I miss most softer sounds due to the tinnitus racket!

@artist01 I also have increased volume on my Tinnitus, but not so bad that it’s just mildly irritating. I wonder if that’s also due to the Metoprolol.

LOL…. I understand. I’ve checked most all of the bedtime podcasts on Apple, and Nothing Much Happens is the one that sounds the most soothing to me. Kathryn’s stories are so simple and nicely detailed. I haven’t found another voice that is as calming. There is another podcast that I’ve listened to, Dan Bain’s Sleepytime Mumbles, but despite the name it keeps me awake. chuckling rather than putting me to sleep!

@tct Hmm. Not sure about Metoprolol increasing the volume of our tinnitus. Mine began in the mid-80's, after a head injury, and increasingly gets worse as the years roll by. Maybe Metoprolol could be the cause of the newly diagnosed Tonal Tinnitus. I'll have to check with Mayo Clinic on the internet.

Hello @italianwitch48

I had a lot of side effects with Metoprolol as well, especially the insomnia, nausea, dizziness, etc. I called my doctor and asked if there could be a substitute med and he prescribed Atenolol. It is the same type of drug, beta blocker, but did not cause the side effects like the Metoprolol did.

How close to your bedtime do you take the second Metoprolol?

Here is some information regarding the side effects of Metoprolol for you to look at, just click on the link to read it,

Many of us on Connect have posted about Metoprolol and it's side effects. I hope you find some relief soon.

Same problems as rosuvastatin for cholesterol will cause the same side effects

This drug is bad. Every 3 months or so, gout like pain, prednisone is helpful. Fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling & painful joints, especially feet. Anyone have an alternative??

Hello @anacarel2018. I can understand your concern with your Rx coming to an end, especially given your anxiety.

I actually found another discussion on the topic of Metoprolol so you will notice I moved your post here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/metoprolol/?pg=9#chv4-comment-stream-header

Members such as @artist01 @tct @karen1945 have all shared that they are, or have, taken Metoprolol and may be able to come in and provide their experiences with you.

Is your Rx done as of tomorrow?

Anxiety is the worse thing for your tachycardia, it’s one of the triggers. Stimulants of any kind are triggers, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol etc. Research my answers on this forum, I already talked about your situation because I’ve experienced it all because of a birth defect in my heart. Also, have an Electrophysiologist cardiologist check you out not a Regular cardiologist. An Electo cardiologist is a specialist in heart rhythm issues such as Tachycardia, Bradycardia and A-Fib. None of my regular cardiologist ever recommended an Electo but instead prescribed Metoprolol which I had Major issues with. This is just my opinion and not a diagnosis of your health problems.

Yes I know but I suffer from ocd and health anxiety is hard over here but with therapy I will keep it low so this don’t give me tachycardia I don’t have any birth defects or anything detect on my echocardiogram all my heart test were clear I got tachycardia apparently for no reason I got so many test done and nothing but I felt so afraid when I got the tachycardia I thought it was something very wrong with my heart so this triggered anxiety and anxiety triggered more episodes it turn into a vicious cycle and I was prescribed this terrible medication and now my ocd and anxiety are 10 times worse on top of that I have to deal with this side effect I have them all
