Zometa infusions to help prevent bone loss from cancer treatments

Posted by trixie1313 @trixie1313, Jun 13, 2019

Has anyone had Zometa infusions to help combat the effects of aromatase inhibitors (bone loss). I have osteoporosis of my spine and osteopenia of the hip and am told I need this to prevent future fractures.

I was given Prolia. The oncologist said that Prolia and Reclast strength bones with AIs, they also help with metastasis. He chose Prolia because it’s a quick shot vs an infusion. It has improved my bones. I will get a bone density scan in May at 5 years out and then have to take something to lock in the benefits. That’s what I am researching now.

Just a couple things. It is my understanding that calcium is no longer recommended for bone health. All dairy fuels the growth of cancer. You can read about the original experiment that proves this in The China Study by T. Colin Campbell. We need a medicine and supplements fact check website!

The Prolia took me from osteoporosis back to osteopenia on my last Dexa 2 years ago. The docs are hoping that I won’t even have osteopenia when I get my scan in May and I will be off the anastozole. If that’s the case, they want me to take a bone medication for maintenance so that I don’t lose the bone mass I gained while on Prolia as I age. That’s what they mean —lock in those Dexa numbers and keep the strong bones I may have built up. I don’t know what they will choose if I am still in the osteopenia category. In the bone density battle between anastozole and Prolia, we will see which one is winning.

I've been told to take calcium, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 together. I took some to a friend hospitalized with a shattered neck (which healed perfectly after nearly 2 years in a halo) and his neurosurgeon read the label and noted that the vitamin K2 was very important in helping the bone shards fill in gaps and rejoin each other. My cardiologist takes the same formula as studies suggest that K2 helps protect the circulatory system from calcium build-up. I'm not a doctor so just passing on what they told me. Here's a side thought. My friends neck healing ground to a halt until they added ultrasound to his treatment, then sped up considerably. The neurosurgeon explained that the ultrasound nearly always did this. I ponder if the vibratory therapy for osteoporosis is analogous? They're both frequency patterns using energy to affect bones in the body and I'm a fan of energy medicine now. Anyone with more insight about if, how and why vibratory treatment helps bones?

It’s my understanding vibration plates at the correct vibration speed and hertz and amplitude have been very successful in treating osteoporosis. 10 mins a day is the recommendation at 30 hz and lower amplitudes to help stimulate bone growth. Check out Margie Bissinger’s website.

@omega20 wondering how you are doing on Prolia. I’m still following data regarding Prolia ‘building bones’. I just read another post regarding this. Hope you are doing fine.

I am on zometa infusions every six months. I had breast cancer (invasive papillary carcinoma) and a lumpectomy. My lymph nodes were not checked (not happy about that). I was encouraged to take zometa because it may help prevent cancer from spreading to the bone. It is just a little extra insurance. I have just had my second zometa infusion and so far all is good. I really hydrate before infusion (40 - 50 ounces of water). I think that helps. My infusions are for 30 minutes. I have some osteoporosis in the hip and osteopenia in other areas.

I am actually on zometa for prevention of possible bone cancer in the future. That is why I chose Zometa not Prolia. I think each have specific advantages. I am trying Zometa (2 treatments so far will do 6 total - 3 years one every 6 months) So far I have done fine with zometa.

@omega20 I thought you were on proofs. I must have got posts confused. I have about 5 more Zometa infusions. Unfortunately, they didn’t start the treatment for 2 years past my Start of Anastrozole. I didn’t know snd then in that period of time went from osteopenia to osteoporosis 🥲

No problem, it does get confusing on here at times.

Thanks, mjay! I'd not heard of this approach until I started reading the posts on here and think it sounds fascinating. I'll do any non-drug thing to stave off bone loss and this looks worth looking into.

I'm posting this because so many of us are taking vitamin D3 along with calcium and K2 and the study is from 2021 so recent.

"1,25-Dihydroxycholecalciferol, the hormonally active vitamin D3 metabolite, is known to exhibit therapeutic effects against breast cancer, mainly by lowering the expression of estrogen receptors and aromatase activity."

To read the study, net search the title"Vitamin D Compounds PRI-2191 and PRI-2205 Enhance Anastrozole Activity in Human Breast Cancer Models"
