How do you halt the progress of osteoporosis?

Posted by coppertonelady @coppertonelady, Oct 21, 2012

I want to mention that for stong bones as well as muscles you have to have a good diet eating foods that are loaded with calcium and minerals look up a list of them and eat them , you have to do weight resistance also I would recommend using a weight vest. it makesbone stronger if you wear it while just walking or doing any activity. The vest is very comfortable because it is actually made for a womans body my doctor said my bone is getting stronger from doing my weight vest walkng with nyknyc. I am so happy because I am afraid of drugs.

Just want to add that tai chi is very good for osteoporosis, and for balance. There are studies supporting its usefulness. I think the slow motions are actually better than walking to build muscle and possibly bone. I avoid yoga!

Agree, no yoga. Yoga has too many forward motions.

Good morning to you all~
I have to say..most impressed with all the research and thought you are putting into seeking out ways of 'fighting' our biggest foe...Osteoporosis and its effect on our lives. For the many of us who have declined the pharmaceutical route..we're always looking for a good outcome without the ill effects of medications. Since my DXA scores are in the terrible minus numbers...and not willing to do the many meds out there...I'm always looking for a better way to fight this battle. I did go to OsteoStrong and enjoyed their workout and WBV. I can see the efficacy in their thinking..but felt it was too much for me in the state that I'm presently in. I did order a Life-pro waver vibration plate...199.00 from Amazon..it's coming today! I'm hoping to not only feel the results from this type of treatment..as well as all the other aspects that this type of therapy has to offer. I'm also doing GrowBone and doing all the good things..nutrition, collagen, vitamins, walking..etc. I've been in more hip and back pain then usual lately.
If I were taking the meds for this..I would have to wonder if the pain was being caused by the medication...which would only add to my stressing over a break. I'm not looking for miracle cures here..just an improvement in my all over feeling of well being. Since we've become our own researchers and seekers of a better tomorrow...I wish us all well! I'll keep you posted regarding my workouts and how I'm feeling so that you can judge for yourselves what modality might be best for your health and peace of mind, as well. Best to you all!

Hi @bunky44 the studies that put women on the whole body vibration machines generally had the participants on the machines twice a day for two 15 minute sessions for a year before mrasuring the results.

Pilates is another form of exercise to do with caution with osteoporosis as many of the exercises involve forward flexion of the spine.

Hi @mpeters, I've been a pretty consistent walker for the last 25 + years averaging a couple of miles a day and my bones still thinned so I'm of the opinion that walking isn't enough. I always weight trained as well, but stopped in mid 2020 when I came down with an autoimmune disorder that caused incredible pain throughout my whole body. Through that, I did keep walking. So now I'm trying to catch up with strength training, whole body vibration exercise, etc. Good luck!

Oh..thanks for this info...can't wait to try it out! It looks like this modality has many other health benefits besides bone building possibilities. I agree about Pilates and certain positions in the practice of Yoga. Tai Chi has been proven to assist in better balance as well as an overall feeling of peacefulness. Thanks for the comments.

I’m very interested in the whole body exercise. For about five years we were going out in our Jeep a lot. During that time, my osteoporosis was very stable. I think it was the vibration in the jeep due to bumpy roads.
