Thyroid nodules

Posted by jojoe @jojoe, Dec 30, 2011

My endocrinologist is concerned about the nodules in my thyroid. We are planning on a biopsy and subsequent surgery if indicated. I am a singer and I am concerned about my vocal chords. Anyone care to share post surgery experience ?

Are these nodules the same thing as parathyroid glands?

Parathyroid glands are responsible for calcium metabolism in the body; they are located outside the thyroid glands. Nodules in the thyroid glands are a formation of tissues in the gland, almost like nuts of various sizes depending on the size. Some are benign, some are of a concern depending on the activities of each of these nodules.

@ jojoe: thanks for the info. I had parathyroid surgery in September, so I was thinking my experience might be relevant to your situation, but probably not. One similarity: location of these glands. Area has a rich blood supply so heals quickly with very small chance of infection.

I had a large nodule on my thyroid since 2008 and was biopsied twice, with the results benign both times. Two weeks ago tomorrow, I finally had a thryoidectomy. The nodule was cancerous. The recovery was pretty easy for me, with no issues. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had a hysterectomy 4 months ago, so this was a much easier surgery for me.

I understand your concern about your vocal cords, since you are a singer. My voice has changed, but my thyroid nodule was large (9cm!) and was pushing on my vocal cords so my voice had been getting hoarse prior to surgery. If you need surgery, I would make sure that you have a good, experienced surgeon.

Good luck!
