Post COVID Symptoms: Brain fog and tingling lips

Posted by drleiferman @drleiferman, Apr 6, 2021

I got Covid in January and shingles one month later. Is it possible that my brain fog and tingly lips are from post covid brought on by getting shingles?

@drleiferman- Hello! My answer is absolutely, yes to both. It took quite a while for my neurological symptoms to disappear after I had the vaccine so I'm not surprised that you have some residual things going on after having the real thing. Boy, you had the grand slam with both of these, one right after the other. And after the year that we've had, and then some, I think we all have some brain fog to get over. But having brain fog after COVID- 19 is not uncommon.

I'd like to invite @hopeful33250 to join in this conversation as she has had Shingles too.

Other than these two things how do you feel? Will you be getting the vaccinations?

Hi Merry! I’ve been so anxious to get the Covid-19 vaccine and finally did Feb 16. As i waited the 15 mins I noticed I started getting tingling in my lips. I let the nurses know there and they checked me. Nothing else was wrong and my oxygen was at 100 and no swelling of anything or any rash etc. I left and easily the tingling then left as well. It has come back around I want to say 5 times when ive been in anxious situations. This monday Feb 28 was the first time the tingling came back after being gone for a while and it was tingling when I wasnt in an anxious situation. I told myself it happened during the 15 after my shot because my anxiety. I have a childhood growing up being scared of shots.. after 18 i wouldn’t agree to flu shots.. so this was my first since a few years. Due to it coming back with me not having anxiety it than triggered more anxiety and I now feel ive been feeling them tingle since that monday. I saw you said covid and or vaccine can cause neurological symptoms? I got covid back in January 20th. I also suffer from chronic migraines and menstrual migraines.. weirdly i got none when I had covid. Can this tingling be a neurological symptom from having covid and the vaccine? Or simply just my anxiety since it comes and goes. I have an appointment today for it and chest pain that came on 4 days after the vaccine as well but it comes and goes. I know anxiety can trigger both those symptoms but I also want to make sure my health is okay for my second vaccine in march. Im not allergic to anything so far as I know and i know ive felt tingling feeling when I get anxiety and even before my migraine attacks. Im just not use to it on my lips and it worries me. I have naturally big sized lips so when they tingle its hard for it not to call my attention and worry. They got chapped during covid and cut on my top lip and recently keep getting chapped again but mainly the bottom. I just want some sort of opinions.

Hi - @aracelilariosespi- Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I also have chronic migraines and it's a darn good thing that you didn't have them when you had Covid in January. A lot of people are afraid of shots and I'm glad that you finally for your vaccines. Did you have the booster? I did. I also have neurological symptoms from the vaccine ( think) it is in my left hand and comes and goes.

I can understand your concern about your lips and I am glad that you are getting help today for it. I don't know if covid, anxiety (which I doubt would be the cause unless you bite down on them) or the vaccine has caused this tingling. Sometimes it's very hard to tell- was it covid or the shot? What came first, the chicken or the egg? Hopefully, you will get relief and answers today. Please, if you have time, will you let me know what your doctor says?

Hello! My primary care doctor checked my lips and did tests on my face reactions to see if it reacted correctly and nothing else had any swelling or anything. She said everything checked out okay and that it could be my anxiety. I can strongly say I’ve gone 5+ years without any kind of shot. I didn’t have good experiences when i was younger and it caused me at the age of 18 to reject even the flu shots. My immune system was just fine even after rejecting. I wouldn't get sick as much. Although it did cause the big stress to now when I did decide to get my first vaccine since years and it being the covid vaccine…it just stresses me that it happened during the 15 mins you wait to see if any reaction happens. Im not allergic to anything once again but I do hope its not allergy related because my second dose is march 16.. monday night it did get a bit redder on the top of my bottom lip where I feel the tingling is happening..now I’m questioning whether its from a certain vitamin deficiency after having covid and 2 weeks after the vaccine. Despite the tingles, I got 2 headaches but they both left within 20 mins after ibuprofen and a bit of warm body (that left the same day) and than cramps on my ankles and feet. Despite that covid arm being sore was there and than I felt fine. So I don’t think even the first dose gave me any big reaction besides tingles the first 15 mins and still are continuing. I see you said maybe not from either 3 (covid, vaccine or anxiety) so now I’m im just curious what it may be and if its a cause for concern before my second dose. It won’t keep me from getting it, I didn’t just get the first to stop there haha but I’m afraid it’ll cause me to stress more as I get it. Took a lot in me for the first and to try to relax.

Oh! I forgot to add in during the 15 mins wait after the vaccine I was playing with my lips underneath my mask cuz i WAS nervous and was holding stuff like a free covid test box, my papers about my vaccine and a water bottle.. so I couldn’t play with my hands so i caught myself kind of playing with my lips not a full bite but like pressing both lips together in an anxious way? Thats when I automatically after felt they were tingling. Sorry i accidentally tagged myself instead of your comment so i dont know if you’d read this part.

@aracelilariosespi- I'm so sorry that I don't have any answers for you you. Perhaps some ink or other substance got on your lips. If I were you I would go to a dermatologist, just for a second opinion. Does this sound reasonable?

I understand the stress you are experiencing being apprehensive about the vaccine.
I know this is a long shot- but do you use whitening toothpaste? My mom had tingling lips, and her doctor recommended she not use whitening toothpaste anymore. The feeling in her lips returned. Problem solved. Just a consideration!

Interesting. And you weren’t having this issue prior to the vaccine? Luckily, I don’t have much head pain, the ocular part is the majority of it, having eye flashes and seeing after images, and just feeling light headed, spacey, foggy. I never had any prior to vaccine, and it began 18 days after the second shot. My doctor wanted to be sure nothing is going on, so I got a brain mri yesterday, I’m hoping it’s all fine. I’d be far less anxious if I knew it was an effect of the vaccine versus a mystery brain issue.

Thank you for your response, hopefully some of the issues begin fading for you.

Exactly thing has happen to me after vaccine in September are you feeling better ?

After having Covid in February, I started having light flashes in side vision in both eyes. I am wondering if this was from the severe coughing
