Lost my ability to sleep and other serious issues
Hi everyone,
Here’s my story in hopes that someone can help me.
Prior to Nov 25 I was taking Lions Manes mushroom and on the 25th I smoked marijuana which gave me a panic attack. Now I believe I developed Central Sensitization syndrome (due to lions mane increasing NGF which can lead to CSS under the right circumstances) due to this because that night of the panic attack I was wide awake and up all night. Now it’s like my body and mind won’t shut off. There’s too much activity in my nervous system.
Since that night I haven’t been able to sleep more than 1-2 hours per night even with a benzo. The past week I haven’t slept at all. I’ve been to the hospital and they couldn’t help me. It’s like my brain won’t shut off and there’s too much activity in it. It physically feels like I’m drinking coffee hourly which I’m not. This has all been happening for over 2 months after supplementing with Lions Mane and then having marijuana.
I’m not sure if the Lions Mane mushroom daily for 2 weeks then taking marijuana that one day had an adverse reaction with each other or not, but ever since the morning after I haven’t been the same sleep wise among other issues. The other issues I’ve been experiencing are internal vibrations for the past month, twitches in my neck, legs, and hands, diahrrea every day, sore legs, and disorientation. The internal vibrations worry me that I may have a neurological disorder. I have an appointment with a neurologist in two weeks. The main issue is I’m not sleeping at all, it’s like I’ve lost that ability.
I feel somehow the Lions Mane and marijuana could had given me brain damage because after Nov 25 I haven’t been the same person. I don’t know how or if this is true but my life has been turned upside with all my symptoms.
Does anyone know whether I might have a serious issue or how I can further look into why it appears I’ve lost my ability to sleep?

I read someone's post on Reddit who seems to be experiencing the EXACT same thing as me (except they took a different mushroom): https://www.reddit.com/r/HPPD/comments/s2uymr/what_happened_to_me/
This is pretty scary.
Hi @lindasmith1222
Do you know there is also just pure CBD (one of the components of medical marijuana) without THC? Give it a try!

@lindasmith1222, but please do take medical marijuana with medical support!!! I take pure CBD for my epilepsy but with all support of my epileptologist.

Just a reminder- our health system is far from free ( paid for by tax payers, of course), but it is available to all, no matter their insurance levels or ability to pay. Yes, our wait times are often too long and doctors know little about non-prescription drugs. We have a long way to go.....
Insomnia is awful; and I can appreciate your circumstances as I share it. I’m 10 months in from a cold turkey withdrawal from many years ethical use of benzodiazepines, i.e. prescribed. That’s 10 months only sleeping from 2 to 5 hours (if lucky), often stitched together in 3 sessions. I have seen neurologist, psychiatrist and psychologist; all confirm sleep problem - no solution,
only discovering severe anxiety, also affecting my gut.
Rather than reinstate benzos, last month I bought a bottle of vodka and tequila and began taking a shot or sipping, i.e. self medicating ~1.5 hours before bed. It has helped to calm the racing thoughts and serious IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and subsequently increased sleep so I am more functional now.
As for dealing with anxiety, there are a number of videos on YouTube by professionals and amateurs sharing insights. While drinking alcohol and engaging videos are not panaceas they have been pragmatic in getting some relief from the debilitating effects of sleep deprivation; also cheaper than doctors visits of no consequence. I feel it’s just a matter of some more endurance time until my baseline sleep gets much better. BTW, I otherwise don’t drink.
Suggest dropping the alcohol. Perhaps try meditation and you may want to review your pre-bedtime habits, such as watching TV, looking at a computer screen. These actions have been known to make falling to sleep difficult. My own experience is I don't get too concern over the amount of time I sleep. For the most part, I am not always aware I have fallen asleep until I wake up. Some nights I sleep 4 or 5 hours and other nights I sleep longer. I just get up and start my day. Maybe even catch a short nap later on. In any case, my mental and physical health are just fine for person of my age. I just don't concern myself with the amount of time I am sleeping. The body usually takes care of that for me.
Sleep hygiene is nice as a preventative measure against insomnia. With sleep pathology one needs more heavy-handed techniques - like surgery for a broken bone versus walking more deliberatively. Please see my profile indicating neurological dysfunction for many years (I am 70+). To support your POV you might want to add information to your own blank profile.
They have a good sleep program at Mayo Clinic but the problem getting appt. I called so many times to get appt but won’t give so I asked my Dr to refereed me he did nothing happens. Is anybody know how to get appt? I haven’t sleep in so many months and sleep meds only work for 2 or 3 hrs and may body is falling apart. Top of that I have MAC and Brochiectactsis. Thanks for listening.
@stress, I'm sorry to hear you haven't been able to make an appointment with sleep medicine at Mayo Clinic. You mentioned you have called many times and also had your doctor give you a referall but still have been unable to get an appointment. Have you tried to make an appointment online? Here's the link if you want to give it a try - http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.
Yes I did and they tell to call to make appt. Thanks!
