Nose bleed while on Xarelto

Posted by mybodymychoice @mybodymychoice, Oct 15, 2021

My husband is on 20mg of Xarelto every other day and after 3 years taking because of A-fib he is starting to have severe nose bleeds!

Hello and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Because of your husband’s A-fib he’s at a risk for blood clots. Xarelto is a blood thinner and works great to prevent this from happening and preventing the possibility of a stroke. However, it also can make it more difficult to stop bleeding from an injury such as a cut or nose bleed. Your husband’s nosebleeds could be a cause of concern since this seems to be a new development for him.

This is from the Xarelto information page:
Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you develop any of these signs or symptoms of bleeding:
Unexpected bleeding or bleeding that lasts a long time, such as:
Nosebleeds that happen often
Unusual bleeding from gums
Menstrual bleeding that is heavier than normal, or vaginal bleeding
Bleeding that is severe or you cannot control
Red, pink, or brown urine
Bright red or black stools (looks like tar)
Cough up blood or blood clots
Vomit blood or your vomit looks like “coffee grounds”
Headaches, feeling dizzy or weak
Pain, swelling, or new drainage at wound sites

Has your husband contacted his doctor about this change in his health?

My husband also takes Xerelto 20 mg and has very frequent nosebleeds!! We have added a humidifier hoping that would help and did for a few weeks. But now they are back. Sometimes more than one a day. He wakes up with a nosebleed

Hello @dstobaugh and welcome to Mayo Connect. I'm sure you must feel concerned regarding your husband's nose bleeds.

I see that some other Connect members have also had bleeding problems. What has your husband's doctor suggested?

My elderly mother is on Coumadin and has nose bleeds. After an ER trip, we started using some products that the hospital used and suggested: a mesh coated with clotting material (first developed in the Vietnam war for battlefield wounds). You can purchase the mesh in nosebleed size or a sheet that you cut yourself. I got the products online, easily. There are also nasal "tampons" that help pack the nose, similar to the packing hospitals do. We also keep soft gel packs (small size, intended for wrist) in the fridge (not the freezer) because cold helps stop bleeding. This doesn't address the cause but hope it helps with the problem!
