Constant tinnitus: Are there any solutions?

This is troubling. Is it any better?

I am currently taking 2-3 60mg capsules of soy isoflavones, spread out through the day. This keeps the tinnitus somewhat quite. Higher doses of the soy isoflavones keeps it completely quite for a few hours every day and the tinnitus at a low sound level the rest of the day. But, I had ER positive breast cancer and was told not to take soy products. Since the tinnitus gets really bad at times and I can not concentrate, when not taking the soy, I have chosen to take the least amount of soy I can and hope that the taurine capsules that I am taking will kick in, in about 3 weeks. This will allow me to get off the soy products.

Is any one doing research to determine the origin of this annoying ailment several people are experiencing. I am 74 and recently began hearing the high pitched sounds, cicadas ! White sounds help, these sounds began after several stressful events happened in my life in December and January. Any advice would be helpful I went to Audiologist and my hearing is fine. I had an MRI and appears normal . I had a large meningeoma removed from the right paritial lobe in 2014 and have MRI yearly as a follow up. Any suggestions would be helpful

the ENT Dr. told me, I have Sensorineural Hearing Loss there is nothing he can do for me. right now I can hear people talking to me on the phone like through a tin can. or the distortions. I haven't give up and keep research for help. is anyone out there can do? Kwong

Hello 47sprinhrookdr. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect discussion on hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss is common, and is quite typical with adult onset hearing loss. I'm surprised an ENT doctor would tell you that nothing can be done for you. People sometimes get that from a primary care physician, but ENTs should be aware of all things that might help.

Have you tried hearing aids? Many people with SNHL get help with hearing aids. The technology keeps getting better. Streamers can help a great deal n noisy settings. It would be worth your time to see an audiologist.

When hearing aids no longer help a person with hearing loss, cochlear implants can be a complete game changer. Many people who could benefit from cochlear implants are not advised to get tested to see if a CI would work for them.

My question is "What have you tried?" And another, "What if anything has been recommended to you?"

Tinnitus is a mystery, But researchers are working on it. Still no cure, but lots of discussion. I've attached a paper that recently appeared in 'The Hearing Journal', a publication for hearing healthcare professionals. It's about things you can do that might help prevent or minimize it.

There are several triggers that have been identified. In many cases, tinnitus, along with hearing loss, starts with frequent exposure to loud noise.
