Just Started Using Resmed 10 Airsense Because of Recall.

Posted by cece55 @cece55, Aug 11, 2021

Hi everyone. My sleep doctor replaced my Phillips Dream Station with the Resmed Airsense 10 due to the recall. I have been using a CPAP for several years and have become very comfortable with it. I would like to know if the following is normal and has anyone else experienced this.

I am using the same mask but my heated tube is a little different as it goes with the Resmed Airsense. The main difference I have found is the silence I experience from using the Resmed Airsense 10 and the easier directory dial on the front. That is where the positive stops.

I have tried to get used to it for the past three weeks. I am not new to this but changing to the Resmed has placed me back to the beginning of tolerating a CPAP. I don't know why. I have gone from 27 events an hour to 1 and my pressure is pretty low. My pressure is set from 6 to 9.

The problem is that I find it hard to tolerate anything past a 7. The Resmed seems to be more sensitive and the air flow on each pressure setting seems stronger than it was on the Dream Station. My respiratory therapist says that this is impossible and that my machine has different algorithms than the dream station and has to learn my patterns. With my old machine I usually stayed at 6 to 8 all the time. Now, with Resmed, after my ramp time (6) for 30 minutes, it goes to 9 and stays there. I am constantly waking up and hitting the stop button so that I can go back to ramp and go to sleep. I also develop a bubble in my throat at 8 or 9 which wakes me up. All this interrupted sleep is making me so sleep deprived.

I find myself getting really angry at the machine and wanting to throw it at the wall....just joking...but these are feelings I had three years ago when I first started using it. Can anyone comment on their experience upon switching machines this past month? I am really trying hard to work thru this and give it some time. I leave my mask on and don't give up because I know I need to wear it and use CPAP.

I am frustrated because I was at such a wonderful place with my CPAP before the recall. Thank You...CeCe55

I’m still waiting for my recalled replacement…… but wondering how can I switch to the RESmed. I haven’t used anything since august2021. A few weeks ago I had an inpatient sleep study. They woke me after two hrs to apply Cpap for the final2 hrs of the test. Now I have to wait til February for appt with sleep dr to get the official results of moderate sleep obstruction (is this the same as sleep apnea?). Medicare already covered the first 13 months of the Phillips. Will I have to start again (with Medicare, or will they even cover a second machine?) if the dr. changes to the RESmed? Sorry for all the questions!

My guess is that Medicare will okay a new machine, but they are months behind in manufacturing them, now. Contact your CPAP supplier? Sometimes the Drs are able to make things happen a little better. Do make sure they prescribe a humidifier for your new one.

Went to the pulmonologist. He suggested ordering a bacteria filter put on the Cpap tubing before it gets to the mask….. while I wait for the replacement of the Phillips recalled machine. My in patient sleep study definitely showed I need Cpap, so hope to get back on track soon. Since Medicare had just finished paying 13 months towards my current machine, dr didn’t think they’d let me try the RESmed. At this point anything should be better than nothing!

Hi first time I am posting. I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and Covid 19 in December of 2020. Started
using my Res Med Airsense 10 shortly afterwards, while I was suffering through Covid for more than a month.
I never had an in person fitting for my C-Pap machine, it was a virtual visit. I also didn't see my Pulmonologist
until April. During the first month I was using the C-Pap I had multiple issues. I had water and bits of something coming into my mouth. The person I talked too that did the fitting said it was probably nothing and to keep using the machine. The machine just kept getting worse -noise wise- and my wife was being kept awake. I was not sleeping very well, even though the monitor showed my breathing was not stopping as often. I stopped using before I had my appointment with my Doctor. We discussed other options such as Inspire. I did have an ENT appt. and it seemed to be a good choice. My Pulmonologist saw 2 spots on my lung he wanted me to get checked. I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in September. I was never a smoker, had no reason I should have gotten Lung Cancer. I asked if Covid could have caused it, he said it is causing a lot of different illnesses.
I also asked about the C-Pap machine as a cause, he didn't think that it should be that. Then in October I found out about the Phillips recall while researching Lung Cancer treatments and found out the C-Pap machine could cause Cancer. I was diagnosed with a very rare Cancer, Large & Small Cell Endocrine Carcinoma. The C-Pap along with Covid 19 at the same time is the only thing that makes sense to me why I have Cancer. Has anybody else been diagnosed with Cancer after using the ResMed Air Sense 10? Please comment. As a side note after Chemo and Immunotherapy(ongoing), I have been told the Cancer is about 80% reduced.

Hello @briancody, Welcome to Connect. I am sorry to hear you were recently diagnosed with lung cancer and you have never smoked. There is an older discussion where members who have never smoked were diagnosed with lung cancer. I believe the members are still active on Connect so you may be able to ask questions and share information in the discussion here - Never Smokers & Lung Cancer: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/lung-cancer-never-smokers/

If I am reading your post correctly, you've only been using the ResMed Airsense 10 CPAP since you were diagnosed in December 2020. The good news is that ResMed CPAP devices are not part of the recall. The recall was only for specific Philips Respironics devices. I had two of them with the recall and have switched to using a ResMed AirMini CPAP. You can find out more about the recall here - https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/e/sleep/communications/src-update

You may also want to look through the different discussions in the Lung Cancer group if you have any questions - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/lung-cancer/

That's good news that the chemo and immunotherapy is going well and your cancer has been reduced. Do you have any other questions you are trying to get answered?

Hi everyone....this is CeCe55 wanting to respond to my hugs and everyone else since I started this post.
I did see my pulmonologist and sleep therapist. They acknowledged that Resmed is stronger than Phillips in air flow and they reset my CPAP to just a flat 6. I was getting air bubbles at 7 and 8. I sleep comfortably and adjusted ti Resmed but my numbers that were below 1 are now 4 to 5 events an hour. My doctor is still pleased and I don't need to adjust the setting.

I recently started wearing a mouth guard again and it's a little hard to keep my mouth closed. I have a feeling that the mouth guard is the real culprit raising my numbers.

I do have to say that I would never go back to the Phillips and don't want a replacement. The Resmed is the quietest machine. I absolutely hear nothing...silence...and the Dream Station was noisy. I used to hear myself breath in and out. My settings were higher on the dream station compared to the flat 6 that I use now.

Blessings to everyone and Happy Memorial Day,
CeCe55

I have been fighting with my Resmed Air10 ever since the VA replaced my old unit. My problem is I now get extreme dry mouth as well as waking up several times per night due to insufficient pressure to allow air into my one nasal passage, causing it to block totally causing pain. Total piece of garbage as near as I can tell, I get more restful sleep in my recliner now than I do in bed using my cpap.

Welcome @pstexas, Really sorry to hear of the poor experience with the Resmed Air10. I switched from my Philips Dreamstation Go to the smaller ResMed AirMini which I really like. I had to buy an adapter so that it could use a standard hose and any mask but it's been really good and my numbers are pretty good with it.

Are you able to talk with a sleep medicine therapist to determine if the setting on the Air10 are the same as your old unit?

Settings are not the same at all. The VA switched to the Resmed Air10 for lord knows what reason. The sleep crew (she's a nurse, not sure if she actually has any other credentials or licensure) there claims it will automatically adjust to what I need, even though the maximum pressure on this unit is less than what my old settings were. The VA; a second chance to give your life for your country.

If you know the setting on the old one, here's how you can do it yourself.
