Orange Tongue

Posted by jenniferforte @jenniferforte, Mar 22, 2019

About a week and a half ago I developed a painful tongue. A week ago today, my tongue turned orange and about 5 days ago the pain dulled and now my tongue feels like it has been burned. My tongue still remains a strong yellow/orange color. I also have a weird taste in my mouth. I wouldn't say it is a metallic taste, just a taste that is different from my neutral taste. I went to the doctor and she prescribed me antifungals, which I take 5 times a day for 14 days. It has been two days on the medication and my tongue has not changed color at all. The antifungal is irritating my mouth a bit. I am just worried that the cause may not be thrust, but something else. I am not pregnant. Does anyone have any ideas? I am starting to get worried.

Hi, can you tell me if you found a cure that worked

Hello. I know it has been a while since you posted this, but I am wondering if you have had any resolution to this, and if so what it was.

I developed an orange tongue years ago and discovered after much digging and researching that it was likely due to an oral overgrowth of Acintomyces spp. bacteria. It went away after treatment with penicillin. I did develop issues with my digestive tract around the same time. Not sure if it was related or not, but I was eventually diagnosed with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.

I just wanted to share my experience. I hope your orange tongue has resolved!

Hi, did it come back or did the penicillin cure it

@franw

I have had a swab and full blood panel, all the results are normal. He now wants to treat me for acid reflux even though I do not have symptoms. Beyond this he has nothing else to offer me.

Hello @robert321, Welcome to Connect. I see that you are waiting for responses to your question about smething that helps if you have an orange tongue. Hopefully @jfn, @heatherme, @franw and others can share what worked for them. @colleenyoung shared the following article earlier in the discussion which may be helpful:

Have you discussed the orange tongue with your doctor?

Not yet, trying to figure out what worked for other people first. I’m not sure if all doctors know how to treat it

The orange tongue takes up many precious doctor"s minutes for me because I have a horrendous taste in my mouth as well. When in the first round it cultured for yeast nystatatin and fluconazole were used. My tongue has had a range of color from orange, orange with a coating of white, a heavier coating of white (still orange in places), green and black. The chlortimazole worked for a while the taste had been reduced and the color was just orange. Will keep updating, as there are more doctors to be seen with regards to this particular puzzle.

Hi @robert321 ,

I wanted to see how the latest treatment worked before I commented. The clotrimazole tablets worked the best. My tongue still had a hint of orange after and the I burned my tongue on Chai. It looked normal where I burned my tongue. Weird! Anyway since then the orange color has receded about 95%. I am really glad some doctors saw the discoloration, as people do not believe you. My tongue also turned white, green, and black. . I saw too many doctors. The oral surgeon was the most helpful, and actually examined my tongue.

Im 95% cured at this writing. Here is what I did for the Orange Tongue...........
1. Brush with Parodontax toothpaste, rinse with warm salt water. Then with clean hands I put a dab on my tongue and left it for 2 min. I use the tongue scrapper to take off yellow. I did this for a month. Then I switch to Crest 3D White "Charcoal" toothpaste and used Colgate Peroxyl mouthwash. I have done this 3xa day. Doctor had prescribed "Metronidazole 500mg tablets" for 7 days (kills all bacteria), then they prescribed "Fluconzaole 150 MG Tablets" 4 total pills (puts only good bacteria back). Take one on 3 day of Metronidazole, then one at end of 7 days, then 1 each 7 days after till done. In meantime use above toothpaste/mouthwash. I change the toothbrush every month (plus wash with peroxide after each use) and I use papercup for mouthwash and throw it out each time. 1/2 my tongue looks red like when I was a kid, part looks almost lighter red and about 5 % now is orange but just at the tips. I found that drinking any alcohol or eating any dairy or sugar restarts it up. This may possibly be temporary but unk at this point. Good Luck.

I stopped using the tongue scraper and the chlorahexadine (on a q-tip to just paint my tongue) and my tongue is orange again. I take pictures every day to document the color. Eww! I will use the tongue scraper and the chlorahexadine again, only longer this time.
