Asthma and Allergies: How often can I use my inhaler?

Posted by soph13 @soph13, Jan 11, 2022

I have very mild asthma but when i am around cats (which i was today) it gets very difficult to breathe. i already took my inhaler 4 times and my nebulizer once because it’s so difficult to breathe. I need to take my inhaler again but i don’t want to overdose on it. Is it safe?

Hello Soph13 and welcome to Connect. The best advice you can get about dosage and side effects of an asthma inhaler would be from the doctor who prescribed it or your pharmacist. Pharmacists have lots of information and most people don't take advantage of their free advice. I know if I use too much, it can make my heart race as I have asthma.

I have allergic asthma and have cats that I am allergic to (which I didn't know about when I got them). I do allergy shots for many things including cats, and I use HEPA air filters in my home and a HEPA vacuum cleaner. Dust and mold spores are a big trigger me me and it has a bit of everything in it. I can tolerate my kitties and don't need the inhaler a lot if I try to keep things clean and do my shots. It's not my favorite thing, but it helps.

Have you consulted an allergist or tried allergy shots before?

Hello Spoh13 - Most inhalers tell you on the prescription label how much is safe to use. There is a limit to effectiveness, but most nebulizers can be used every 2-3 hours for a few days for an episode. The most important thing is to get away from the allergen (in this case the cats) as soon as possible, then shower & wash the clothing you were wearing. If you happen to be a guest in a home with cats, sometimes you can use an antihistamine like Benadryl and wear a mask to minimize your symptoms. And try not to sit on furniture where the cats sit, or pet/play with them.
Are you still around the cats?
