Which hotels at Mayo in Rochester are connected to skywalk/subway?

Posted by retirement75 @retirement75, Jan 7, 2022

Are there hotels connected to Mayo Clinic by skywalk/subway that would offer onsite restaurant?

@retirement75, there are quite a few hotels at Mayo Clinic in Rochester that are connected by the skyway and/or subway that offer onsite restaurants. The Kahler Grand and the DoubleTree come to mind.

Allow me to tag a few "frequent visitors" who can help compile a complete list to help you out like @rosemarya @roch @loribmt @bernese53 @naturegirl5 @jenniferhunter @allenaj @savinggrace16 @nana75165 and others. And of course, you can always rely on @lmindela from Concierge Services, who will add his knowledge.

Retirement75, do you have any other wishes or limitations that we should know about when making these recommendations, such as mobility limits, budget, preferences?

Another option to you might want to consider other than a hotel with an onsite restaurant is to stay at a hotel which offers small kitchens in the room. We stayed for months at the Marriott Residence Inn. The rooms have full sized refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, dishwashers where you can make your own food. I had special dietary needs so that suited us really well.
Also most restaurants have delivery service to the hotels so that you’re not locked into just one menu.

Here is a list of hotels with in-house restaurants for you.

How long will you be staying?

I have attached a map that shows mayo buildings and surrounding downtown connected via subway or skyway. Subways are blue, skyways are red. The map is few years old, so some things have changed. Example, there is no longer a Holiday Inn Express or Day's Inn. And some new hotels have been built. I live local so have not stayed in any of the hotels.

@retirement75 I had stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Broadway and used the sky ways and the subways to walk to Mayo and my appointments at the Gonda Building. That was a very long walk that took us about 20 minutes. That might not be a great choice if walking or someone pushing a wheelchair is difficult. I always choose a hotel with a kitchen because I have food allergies, so it is hard to be able to eat in a restaurant, and these days I try to stay out of public places because of Covid, so the privacy of eating meals in a room is preferable.

The first time I came to Mayo, I stayed at the Days Inn that was a couple blocks from the Gonda building. It was older and not well kept, and apparently is no longer there anymore. When I had surgery at St. Mary's, I stayed right across the street at Aspen Suites. It was very nice and one of the more expensive suites (with full kitchens) because you could walk across the street and be in the hospital.

There is a new Candlewood Suites with full kitchens on Broadway in the area near the "Ear of Corn" water tower. (also near the Hampton Inn) You would need to drive or ride a shuttle to Mayo as it is about a mile away to the Mayo and Gonda Buildings. If you need to be at St. Mary's Hospital, that would be another mile down the road. There are Mayo shuttles between these campuses. I had also stayed at Towneplace Suites at 43rd Street NW which is farther north from Mayo about 2 or 3 exits down the highway from St. Mary's. A lot of closer hotels in walking distance are more expensive, and since we could drive to the clinic, it was OK to stay a bit farther away. I found Candlewood Suites to be the closest and most reasonable rates for my needs. Ask for the Mayo Clinic rate when you make reservations.

I would recommend calling the Concierge service because they can help you find the most reasonable rates or amenities that you are looking for, and it is a free service to Mayo patients. I called them and they recommended the new Candlewood Suites that I had not yet discovered and they are very friendly.

@retirement75 Hello, I have stayed in different hotels that connect via the subway but not the skywalk. I believe most restaurants within hotels have reopened since many were closed in 2020. You will need to check to make sure.

You will want to gauge how much walking you would like to do. The hotels that connect via the subway and skywalk vary in distance.

The "big" Marriott on 1st St. SW offers an onsite restaurant. I haven't stayed there but have visited friends who stayed in that hotel and liked it very much. They have strict COVID policies that they enforce.

The Marriott Residence Inn connects to the subway and is a relatively short walk via the subway. There is not a restaurant on site. We've stayed there and liked it. They also have strict COVID policies.

I do not recommend Kahler Inn and Suites which is very close (across the street from the Charlton Building of Mayo Clinic) because we had a very bad experience last October with their lack of COVID policies. There was a large group of adolescents attending a state conference that were booked into the hotel when we were supposed to stay there. The lobby was completely filled with the teens and no one was wearing masks and there was no social distancing. We even talked with management at the Kahler Inn and Suites about this and the manager did not take our concerns seriously so we reported this to the County Health Department.

Like Jennifer, I recommend that you consider contacting Concierge Services at Mayo Clinic. They are very helpful in matching people up with their needs and prices ranges. I coped Jennifer's information below:

Both times I was there in 2019 we stayed at the Kahler Inn and Suites. It was very attached to the Mayo and it had a very good restaurant . I would stay there again.
