MTHFR mutation and supplements to take

Posted by contilucy1960 @contilucy1960, Aug 27, 2021

I have been taking up to 11 vitamins and supplements a day as prescribed by a doctor 7 years ago, due to MTHFR gene mutation. I would like to update what supplements and vitamins are needed for this condition. Any input welcome!

What I'm taking is B12 liquid, Vitamin D, methyl folate, COQ10, Nutrient 950, Magnesium, Vitamin B6, then I also take iron, fish oil, calcium for bone strength, Vitamin E to prevent tardiv dysconesia. Does anyone know if this is the best thing to do, to take all these supplements? Thanks in advance!

Hi @contilucy1960

Glad you are trying to stay on top of your MTHFR with added supplements. I am not entirely sure of all the supplements that you need to be taking, but here are some sites that may give some insight.

Are you also trying to avoid harmful foods with this mutation such as enriched grains, like pasta, cereals, breads, and commercially produced flours?

Thank you so much for your response! I do eat pasta, but it is usually brown rice pasta and I try to eat only organic whole grains (like WASA rye crackers). I do not usually eat refined foods and I try to avoid sugar. What I don’t know is whether I need to stay on ALL those supplements.

Is it necessary to take supplements if you are positive for one copy of the A1298c variant and normal for the c677t? So confusing. Dr just brushes it off as she did when she diagnosed me w hashimotos and said not to change my diet without even knowing my diet. Needless to say I was fired!

hi Erin, welcome. There’s limited research regarding the variant A1298C. Available studies are generally geographically or ethnic-based. But you might find this article of help regarding supplements and diet for people with the MTHFR gene:

I'd like to bring fellow members @contilucy1960 @bet @grammanancy @forestguide @blendedmom @courage3512 @lilli64 @msfxit @diannelk @monk1015 into this discussion. They may have more experiences with diet, supplements and the MTHFR gene to share with you.

Erin, do you take any supplements at the moment?

Thank you for adding me. I hope to learn more about how to handle MTHFR gene diagnosis

I WAS taking pure encapsulated methyl assist. I Am taking D3 selenium, life extension 2 a day multi vitamin plus armour and levothytoxine for hypo thyroid. I have hashimotos and did a test through fm testing and it came back 96% positive for fibromyalgia. My sed rate is 30. Got that result back today. Rheumatoid dr is going to see me in January for that. Sore shoulders. Like fire! Possible polymyalgia rheumatica. Diagnosed myself til dr can see me. I hope cortisteroids will relieve my pain but worry about bone loss. Already had three bone density scans and I have osteopenia in back. Thanks for the help. I need it

There is some related information on MedlinePlus Genetics site that might be helpful.

"Normal Function - The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase is important for a chemical reaction involving the vitamin folate (also called vitamin B9). Specifically, this enzyme converts a form of folate called 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to a different form of folate called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This is the primary form of folate found in blood, and is necessary for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine to another amino acid, methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and other important compounds."

I have tested positive for being double heterozygous for the MTHFR gene mutation. I can't find much info on this particular mutation combination, but I have been taking 3,000mcg of l-methylfolate and wonder if I should be taking more. I suffer from depression and anxiety, fibromyalgia and various muscle aches and pains.
