I personally had Blue Cross federal for my transplant which worked well but only for the transplant. After that first year it was a out of network plan and paid very little.
I have Medicare with tricare for life secondary and for continuing medical needs at Mayo work very well. But I agree with the others talk to Mayo directly as I was not aware of the issue after 1 year and it cost more out of pocket than I expected.

I have traditional Medicare with a supplemental policy through TransAmerica. I'm covered at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Yes, call Mayo directly and ask. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan through United you'll need to find out if Mayo Clinic is in your network. It's always good to ask these questions before you get there so you won't have any surprises.

I have an additional comment / suggestion, when you call your insurance company it is helpful to have Mayo Clinic's Tax ID for each location.

I called my insurance company once (BlueCross) and they asked for Tax ID. I think it is how they can search for specific clinic. With so many clinic / hospitals having similar names or multiple locations, it is how insurance companies help determine eligibility and if a clinic is in network.

Hi, I’m not sure who told you that Mayo doesn’t accept Medicare. That’s not accurate. I’m a patient there and have Medicare. It’s not at issue and everything is taken care of smoothly and efficiently. They’re required by law to accept Medicare. But you do need to be preauthorized by your insurance carrier before attending a clinic.

I also have Medicare and I am a patient at Mayo Clinic. If you are thinking of Medicaid then each state runs their own Medicaid plan. Medicare is run by the federal government and is not the same as Medicaid. As suggested by Lori please call Mayo Clinic for clarification. Their insurance and business staff is very helpful.

@loribmt and all...Thanks, Lori. Lots of good info. I found the financial department to be quite helpful. I have medicare and AARP United Health Care Plan F. I walk out of the Mayo Clinic and hospital with nothing to pay. I get acupuncture and massage at the Integrated Health Department which are self-pay. They no longer bill Medicare or insurance for their dept. Pooh! I may have to limit these really helpful positive additions to my healing plan. Acupuncture is most helpful, $174 per session. Massage is $88 per session.

They do not accept some BCBS advantage plans, and other advantage plans I think. My son had to get different, a true supplement to enable him to see Mayo doctors.

The primary care physicians at Florida Mayo don't accept Medicare. That's been a problem for many who need a new primary care doc. I have a good out of Mayo doctor, but the only one I see is not Mayo. It causes some issues with getting him the information from tests and doctors he needs to help me. I'm continually working on that.

The confusion about Mayo and Medicare may be because Mayo's policy has changed over the years. At one time the policy was different based on location.

And in addition, it can depend on what type of "Medicare" insurance you have.

I have original Medicare (Part A and B) and Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) and go to Mayo Rochester.

If you have a Medicare Advantage policy (also known as Part C) from a private insurance company, you may be restricted by what doctors are in network. Some Medicare Advantage policies are accepted at Mayo.
