Multiple Nodules in Thyroid and Lung

Posted by marye2 @marye2, Nov 11, 2021

Anyone having this happen to you? I've had Mixed Connective Tissue Disease for over 25 years, but I don't think it is causal. I am in late 60s. Thyroid biopsy benign. One in lung is slow growing, will be followed. Also one lymph node to be biopsied. Unnerving, but no real symptoms. Found on a CT

@marye2, here's some general information about nodules that you've perhaps already seen.
- What to Know About Nodules https://www.healthline.com/health/nodules

It's common to not have any symptoms with nodules and that they are discovered when scans are done for other reasons. I'm glad that your doctor is following up on both the thyroid and lung nodules. You may be interested in these related discussions as you prepare for the biopsy of the lung nodule.

Mary, did they tell you the size of the lung nodule? What was the reason for the CT scan?

I got the first CT as a baseline for Inflammatory Lung Disease as I have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease. I have several nodules; the petscan showed a ground glass nodule measuring up to 1.0 cm in the lung. If it grows it can be removedby laparscopy; biopsy would not work due to laciness of the borders. There are some in my Thyroid and the biopsy was benign. They are going to follow it, and look at it in May. However, the petscan found an axillary lymph node level 1 and 2 lymphadenopathy so expecting biopsy for that soon. It is all unnerving to have so many in two places, but no symptoms.

Hello , I’m new here. Had my annual chest CT scan as part of a program for former smokers etc. For the past 5 years had yearly scans that showed several nodules, most smaller than 3mm
Recently my latest scan showed a slight increase in one of the nodules and recommended to repeat in 6 months, not a year. Naturally I am concerned and was interested to hear if others had a similar result and what could mean an increase of 2 mm in already a 2 mm nodule. Many thanks. Marta

@interest Marta, I’m going through the same screening. It actually started a couple of years ago when a nodule was found on a pneumonia chest X-ray follow up. They haven’t changed much, the largest 10 mm.
They appeared after influensa A. Nodules can also appear after infections, including Influenza A. There is a set protocol for following nodules.

Thank you Ingegerd for your message. This nodule was there since my first scan. Unlike you I didn’t have influenza or even a cold. I guess will have to wait 6 months to know more.

Well, I didn’t know that infections could cause nodules then. I was quite anxious before the next one and the one after that - thought my smoking days caught up with me!

I have existing nodules growing larger in my lungs and new ones as well.
I am having a needle biopsy this week to see if one is cancerous.
Does anyone else have this condition of nodules continuing to grow .
What do you do about stopping nodules from forming and others from growing?

I will be back once I get my needle biopsy

They could not do a biopsy on the lung ground glass one, because it was still too small to be able to hit the solid middle. I just had a yearly CT scan (amazing how time passed!) and no changes visible. I still have the original ground glass, but it is still smallish. I will have to show up again in a year for the tests. There is some literature out there that being low on D3 might be causal. Here's one. https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20180625/vitamin-d-deficiency-could-be-lung-disease-risk
