stomach swelling after liver transplant four years ago

Posted by deejean123 @deejean123, Jan 24, 2017

I have a concern and would like to hear if anyone else has had this problem -- I was given a new recliner two months ago and in the past two weeks when I get up from it after having it reclined in a semi laying position== I have noticed a pulling in the rt side of my stomach area below my rt breast. In the past week now my stomach is swelling and if I sit on my bed and bend over to put on socks or shoes that I have to tie, my swelling feels like it is being pinched
I go to Cleveland clinic on the 15th of Feb for my yearly checkup and I will have a procedural catscan so I don't want to go to the er and have one here since the appointment is so close == any suggestions

Hi, @ronromo Welcome to Connect. I do have to admit I have a bulging tummy but I assumed it was just because I was very overweight prior to my transplant and in the couple of years before I intentionally lost a lot of weight so I do have excess skin there. In my last 6 weeks or so prior to transplant I retained a huge amount of fluid making my belly really large and I think that too stretched the skin leaving an excess. As you get older skin is not as elastic so when it stretches it doesn't go back.

I have learned to just live with it being larger, it does make purchasing pants a bit difficult unless the waist is stretchy. Plus, I am currently using a medication for osteoporosis that is injected into your belly and that is known to cause what people refer to as "puffy belly". Just what I needed, more puff.

I don’t think my stomach is full of water, but not sure. I had Osteoporosis but I was on Forteo for 2 yrs then transitioned to Prolia. As a result, I have be upgraded to Osteopenia. 🙂

@ronromo, Thank you for completing your profile information. I see that you had your transplant for PSC. Guess what - so did I, 12 years ago!! Glad to meet you. There are not many of us. Other than your hernia surgeries, How are you doing?

@ronromo I don't think mine was always fluid retention. A while after my transplant I got rid of the excess fluid, it has come back with this medication - Tymlos.

I think beyond my current fluid retention, it's just excess skin/fat from when I was much heavier, and as I said above, when you are older your skin is less elastic so it just stays there.

I walk and play golf 3 times a week. Stopped going to the Fitness club because of Covid. Maybe later. Not traveling much since I'm immunocompromised. I had Osteoperosis but I have been on medicine and I've been upgraded Osteopenia, a little win.
