Yes I am having a total Pancreatectomy/splenectomy. I realize that there are major life changes. I am relying on my care team at the hospital.
I am trying to make arrangements for a care team for when I get home.
Sometimes we’re faced with no other decision than to meet these new challenges head on, right? I went through similar 2 years ago. Odds of survival without treatments/procedure were grim. So I opted to go for broke! Beats the alternative. With the help of my Mayo Team I’m surviving and thriving.
You have that same inner voice guiding you forward. In my house it’s called the Sprit of Endurance. We except, adapt and move on. I see this same spirit in you, knowing there will be major changes you’re already setting in motion what it will take to help you adapt to the new you. In time it will become second nature. And believe me, we never know how strong we can be until it’s the only choice.
Being cancer free is the goal! You’ll do what it takes to win this battle.

Are you working with the social services dept at Mayo? They’re really good with helping to work with your insurance company to set up home care services after discharge.

Geez, @loribmt , can I just clone your comments. You never know how strong you can be until it’s the only choice. This should be at the top of every thread. If we could just give that feeling to the person before they have gone into the storm it would be soooooo helpful.

Thanks for your positive thoughts. It’s very encouraging since I am scared of facing this surgery. However the hope of cancer free is what I am hoping for. I have a supportive family and they are what I want to live for.

Hi Kyle, I hope everything goes smoothly with your surgery tomorrow. Were you able to get permission for both your daughters and spouse to visit?

Did not get permission for my daughters. I don’t know who I would get permission from. When I asked the surgeon he said ask my nurse who said check with the person who does my intake. Both daughters are coming anyway and hoping for permission.

I know there are pretty strict covid restrictions in place that which state only 2 people on the list and they will be the only 2 allowed during your stay. It’s to cut down on any possible transmission of Covid or any illness to you.
But there is also a caveat which says it can be overridden with clearance, or something like that. So, either during intake, or recovery, I’d sweet talk your nurses. They’re your best allies with family, creature comforts and pain meds! ☺️
Have your daughters been vaccinated? That might go a long way too in reassuring the nurses.

I agree with @loribmt, admissions person or nurse. The person doing screening at entrance probably does not have authority. And her suggestion that if daughters have been vaccinated may help, make sure they bring their immunization card. Maybe even go get a COVID test right before visit to prove they are currently negative. Anything you can do to show you are being careful.
My sister was hospitalized during COVID for non COVID reasons earlier this year and they were very strict. Even my brother and sister who worked at St Mary's could not get past nurses to visit.
As nice as it would be to have your daughters around, remember the staff did not make the rules, but it is their responsivity to following rules and are doing it protect patients.

How are you after your total pancreatectomy? Hope you are doing OK. My sister went through a Totalpancreatectomy done by Dr. truty back in December 2021. She has lost a lot of weight and is trying to get her nutrition back up. I was wondering what do your nutrition plans look like? do you work with a dietician at the mayo clinic who specializes in your case? Sending you lots of positive vibes and a smooth recovery.
