Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

Posted by suze317 @suze317, Oct 17, 2018

I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

I have read a lot on this site about injections in the stomach. Is anyone injecting in the thigh? Is it just as effective?

@bkour Yes, there is a good reason for injecting into the stomach/abdominal area rather than the thigh. The injections are meant to be subcutaneous—just under the skin layers and not into muscle. For most of us, the abdomen is perfect because the skin and fat are loose enough to be pinched up, thus making a perfect injection site. Yes, you can use the thigh as long as the skin can easily be pinched up. The medication should NOT go into the muscle! And, also, you want a wider area to choose an injection site. The thigh really isn’t suitable.
Are you having concerns about injecting into your abdomen?

Yes, I have concerns because of the side effects I have read in this forum.

@bkour The clinical educator at Tymlos and my doctor both said that Tymlos should be in the belly area. I think @becsbuddy explains why very well.

What side effects that would occur in your belly but not in your thigh are you concerned about? I have had no problem with the injections, I started doing them in March. Initially I had little nausea afterward, perhaps something else, I really can't remember but whatever my side effects were they were extremely mild and dissipated quickly.

@bkour These decisions are so difficult aren’t they? I was as mixed up as anyone when my doctor said i needed an osteoporosis medicine. He told me that he has had 20 yrs. experience with Reclast, so I’m going to trust him and go with Reclast. But your issue is more to do with the medication given by injection, right? You may want to follow the other discussion groups on osteoporosis. It seems that there is no 1 drug that meets everyone’s needs.

Have you had a good discussion with your doctor? Maybe he/she has other patients you could talk with.

I sure wished my BP would go down instead of up then there would not be any side effects. All my problems stem from the high BP and pulse. My heart pounds too fast and pressures on my chest. And then some night nothing but the bad nights outweigh the good and I am fatigued and then do not get anything done. But I can tell that I quit Tymlos and felt better about being on it. And I still have three months' supply in the refrigerator. I hate to waste it. Maybe with cooler weather and winter coming, I would do better with it. Or try as one put it that they give the injection and then do their exercises. Maybe that would keep my BP down. How to know what is the best approach. I am glad others can tolerate the side effects if any. Thanks for sharing your experiences. It sure helps to know one is not alone. Now where do you go next on your journey to building bone? KLH

If for some reason you are unable to use it here's what I did.

I had an expensive (nothing like the cost of Forteo) medication left over (unopened). I took it to one of the free community health centers. They were so happy to get it as they could not afford to purchase it. You may have to do some calling around or ask who you should call. Just saying.

(The clinic I called: the phone people told me they wouldn't take it. I got a higher level person and told what I had. They had me come in and hand of directly to one of the upper level staff.)

Good Morning thought I would tell you I did it last night. I took the two clicks. You are right no side effects. So I will keep this up for two and then move it up to 3 or 4 clicks. Thanks for the encouragement. Hope you got to 7 clicks are all right. Stay well and keep me informed. KLH

Good morning, I started my second week with only 2 clicks but seems to be ok. The only thing is the fatigue in the morning. It is the afternoon before I really get anything done. How are you doing on your clicks? Did you get to four clicks? Otherwise, I hope you are fine and staying healthy. Hope to hear some good news. KLH

Good Morning, I got the ok from my PA to try again. So I am doing 2 clicks at night. Last night started my second week. So far so good. Only I am fatigued till about 1300, so did not get much done that I should. Next week I will 3 clicks and see how that goes. Thanks for the information. That is a good idea to help someone. I applied to Radius Assist and was approved for 18 free months. It is supposed to start in the next month or so. I hope I can go for the next 20 months. So what are you doing now to build your bones? Let me know your progress. Keep healthy and safe. KLH

I am on 4 clicks. Some days I feel sick for a few hours, some days I feel sick several hours later. But I am going to go up to 5 clicks in a few days. Glad you are okay on 2! Do you have a blood pressure cuff? It really helps.

Hi, glad to hear from you. I was wondering how you were progressing. Last winter I bought a wrist cuff for B/P and P, an O2 finger, and a thermometer. On Oct 3rd, I will go for three clicks. So far not bad, a couple of times I was feeling sick but left quickly. I still wake up with not much energy. And I need all I can mustard. I am trying to get our taxes done and to the CPA by this weekend or I am in trouble. But I did get 50 Qts of tomato juice canned and then the other half brought home 11/2 bushel of apples for me to make applesauce(more work). You do yours in the morning? I tried but had to go back to bed. I will think about you in a few days and hope all goes well for you, so stay healthy and hope to hear from you soon. KLH

Good Morning, have you made your decision on which drug. I would be interested in how you are doing. I am on Tymlos. I went four months and had to stop for a month because of side effects. But have heard from alot that had none. Everyone is different. But I am back on only starting slowly and increasing clicks every week or two. Hope to be back to full dosage if I can but if not will settle for half dosage. If there are any questions I can help you with, I will be glad to try from my experience. Good luck and stay safe and well. KLH
