Looking for Insurance/Home Health Aids Agencies in California

Posted by parkin41 @parkin41, Sep 27, 2021

Hi everyone, my dad will be moving to California from Florida and he has Long Term Care due to Parkinson's Disease. I was wondering if anyone knows what Insurance provider in California pays the most for HHA (Home Health Aids) and also any reccomendations as far as HHA Agencies I should look into or any tips or advice on doing this transition with the Social Security office.

Hi @parkin41, I wonder if @lioness @funcountess or @jakedduck1 might have information for you regarding a good insurance provider who covers Home Health Aids.

I don’t know enough about Medical Insurance these days to even recommend a company. I don’t know if high-quality private health insurance is even available these days. It seems like everyone has jumped on the Medicare part C advantage plans, HMO/PPO band wagon which in my opinion is nothing more than an accelerated death sentence.
Best insurance we ever had was through the Principal Financial Group which was/is a private insurance and it was excellent but extremely expensive. But anything and everything was always paid no questions asked ever, no test or treatment ever denied. I’d recommend a medical insurance broker who deals with all types of Medical insurance.
Good luck,
Jake

Good morning @parkin41 Does your dad need insurance or just home health aides? I like @jakedduck1 suggestion of a medical insurance broker. California probably has a state office that registers the agents. Also, check the Area Agency on Aging in the town he’s moving to. Be sure to let me know if you learn anything!

@parkin41 You can use the Google feature to find home health care agencies in the area where your dad will be. And Medicare does cover home health care under Part A. I just got my 2022 Medicare handbook yesterday, and looked it up!

In my experience, making such a big move for your dad may include some frustration and stress. Making plans to alleviate as much of that as possible, may be key to keeping your sanity. Looking into the county's senior services, Area Agency on Aging [like @becsbuddy mentioned] and having an ombudsman/advocate assist you and your dad, will be key. Let me know how I can help further. I just moved out of California 2 years ago.

Hello, @parkin41 I wasn't certain from your note if you live in the Los Angeles area and available to help your father transition to his new life in California. In my own experience, figuring out what is covered through Medicare Advantage programs - beyond Medicare A and B - or through Medicare Supplemental Insurance policies is difficult and cumbersome. Some of my friends in California have been with Kaiser Permanente for many years when they were working and chose to remain with Kaiser after retirement. It's possible that Kaiser has good Home Health coverage but I don't know. Can you figure that out online or call and ask? Do you know anyone over age 65 in the area where your father will reside? If yes, can you ask about their coverage and why they chose what they did? What coverage does your father currently havein Florida? Is it worth figuring out if that coverage can be transferred to California?

I wish you blessings as you navigate all this to help your dad.

Thanks for the advice. I live in Oakland, I may know some folks that are over 65, hopefully they also have government insurance. My dad currently has Humana but they don't pay much for HHAs' I was told by his current Case Manager to start the transition process a mknth before he and my mom move hopefully it all goes smooth but I highly doubt that.
