Neuropathy Pain at Night: What helps?

Posted by Donald @donfeld, Jun 8, 2020

THC or marijuana for me relieves pain from neuropathy. It works every time takes a few minutes and a few puffs of smoke and it comes it down for some crazy reason that makes this drug so popular.

Thanks John,
The Foundation link looks very helpful. I currently follow the Mayo neuropathy group.
I have tried lots of treatments and medication but haven't discovered the one that will stop the condition worsening. I have tried heat, cold, acupuncture, massage, meditation, Calmer Scrambler Therapy, high dose steroids for three days in hospital, ketamine therapy for 10 days and multiple medications including immunoglobulin.
I am now trying Serolimus/Rapamune to see if that will halt the progression.
Sleep is an issue as the discomfort is worse at night, the numbness and feeling of constriction and feeling of not being able to move my ankles is more severe.
Best wishes,
Richard

Richard, the one thing I didn't see mentioned was antidepressant therapy. I'm guessing you've been there but it has been beneficial for many, I'm unfortunately not one of them. I use Baclofen for muscle spasm and increasing my dose to 4x day has helped me control my nighttime leg issue and improved my sleep.

Thank you, John. I checked out the discussion on central sensitization. When i found Mayo Connect, I recall that I was searching for information on obesity and osteoarthritis- trying to find some inspiration/ motivation to lose weight to help my knee. The post about neuropathy caught my attention because my attacks of peripheral neuropathy have been so difficult, maddening and caused me to lose much sleep. I mentioned Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements which have been amazing, but I have also made lifestyle changes. I have reduced hours at work, changed my diet to mostly vegetarian/no wheat or sugar, resolved some stressful relationships, began swimming 3-4x week. I am grateful to have found a wonderful neurologist.

Read what you're doing for your knee OA and I think it's great. I went from 206# to 158# in one year by increased exercise, better diet, and I retired. My only job now is trying to control my pain and that is job enough right now. Keep up the great work you're doing. I found the pain free periods motivation enough to keep me going and it still does.

My neurologist prescribes clonazepam 1 mg. and I sleep 7 - 7 1/2 hours every night.

Just a caution that Clonazepam can cause disorientation in some people. It made me very disoriented after just a few doses. It did relieve my neuropathy pain.

Gabapentin did the same to me, so I had to discontinue taking it. Everyone has to find what works for them. I have been taking clonazepam each night for years to help me sleep.

I take gabapentin twice a day and duloxitine/Cymbalta once a day. Both help but nothing takes it all away. On really bad days I also take extra strength Tylenol at bedtime to help me sleep.
