Controlling Tinnitus: What works for you?

Posted by scottk @scottk, Jul 1, 2019

Hello: Has anyone on this site had any luck with controlling tinnitus? I see certain things advertised but always sceptical. Any thoughts/ideas?

I tried to listen to calming noise from an app called sleep sounds and I was very happy. The tone in my head went away for awhile!

I tried that with my grandsons' little machine, and it was like two competing sounds in my head - most distressing. I know there is something out there - just need to find it.

Mine seems to get very loud when I’m tired. It sounds like I’m on an airplane. There are times it’s like a constant hum, music or two different sounds in each ear. I’ve downloaded the Oto app and just have to set it up. I’m hoping it helps in some way. Has anyone tried it?

Hi, tinnitus is awful. If I don’t sleep well in the morning it’s worst. I can never nap, not even 5 minutes or it’s loud. Rainy weather makes it worst. I can not drive with windows down in the car either, extremely annoying. I use ear plugs frequently around people to lower the noise. The best fitting ones I found at a company on line called eargasm. You can buy different ones. I love the fitting. I have many. I use different ones depending on noise. One pair I have works wonders at the dentist. I find going there is extremely difficult. My husband compares the dental drill dB and I buy what drowns it out. My dentist keeps a pair just in case I forget. As I get older it seems more root canals and crowns. Comes with a great tiny case. I have tiny openings in my ears and they carry perfect size for me. It’s no cure, it just can help. Good luck.

I am a American Tinnitus Association tinnitus Coach with severe tinnitus and moderate hearing loss. I conduct tinnitus support group classes here in Daytona beach, FL and support anyone over the phone or by internet Zoom. I was trained on white noise and cognitive behavioral therapy. I am an avid 13 year volunteer who was taught tinnitus support from a tinnitus professor here in Florida, University of Florida Health. Brain retraining with white noise, pink, lavender can help you retrain the brain. This is not a short process it takes time and coaching and a positive attitude. Hearing aids helped me so much through amplification and sound. Please stay positive, active if possible, visit only a seasoned tinnitus Audiologist for a true diagnosis and get some help. Good Luck to you.

Mine popped up the other night and sounded as if the furnace or AC had been turned on. I could actually feel it running and hear the 'constant hum'. After checking to see if the AC or furnace was on, I also checked the refrigerator. It was so subtle that I did not recognize it as tinnitus. Once I knew what it was I was able to ignore it.

where i live, there was a lightning strike, & several houses including mine lost power. nothing in house running.
while waiting for power to return, I began to hear low hum/rumble motor sound, could feel vibs in floor. went on for hour + then cut off??
tinnitus, neighbors pool pump, (other houses nearby had power), or infrasound???
know its not in house appliances, how do you determine source?
some piece of sound eqpt that is properly calibrated ??

Thanks for the recommendation - I will be seeing the audiologist in 3 weeks. My tinnitus has gotten bothersome enough that it overrides soft voices sometimes - a change for me, as I have had it for over 35 years, so I can no longer ignore it easily. I may be back for some tips and training afterward.
(PS - @julie04 - it was also a low-conflict way to get my husband to go to a real audiologist. "We both have issues, let's get this settled..." And I will be in the room, so I can write down what the audiologist actually says to each of us.)

I have not tried the Oto app but have tried Tinnitus Aid and Resound Relief. Sounds like your tinnitus issues are very similar to mine. As the day goes on it gets louder. I also find out that noisy environments actually make my tinnitus hum louder. Been progressively worse the last two years. Let me know how you like the Oto app.

Has anyone with tinnitus experienced louder tinnitus when exercising or being in a hurry? I would love to hear from you. I have read many things about tinnitus but never heard of this aspect.
