Post-Covid Racing Heartbeat?

Posted by spinto02 @spinto02, Mar 13, 2021

I had covid for several weeks. I had a bacterial infection in my throat and I felt like the middle of my chest during this time . I purchased a oximeter during Covid to monitor my oxygen levels they were always between 97 and 100 .however after feeling better my heart rate appears to go very high and I get stabbing chest pain . I have been hospitalized once for this a couple of days ago . I also have inflammation in my upper lungs area confirmef with a catscan I am wearing a heart monitor for a month. Doed anyone who has had covid experience a racing heartbeat?

I've been dealing with covid side effects too
since I became ill on Aug 7th, the lingering symptoms now are the fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath and rapid hearbeat, especially if I'm walking. Also the fast HR seems to happen at night when I'm lying down, making it difficult to sleep without the use of zzquil. I'm wondering if I need to be further concerned on heart rate or let it ride for a while. I do have the residual opacities in my lungs, so that explains the SOB and heaviness I feel in my lungs, but the episode of the fast heart rate concern me.

Hi Sara, welcome. I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with long term effects from COVID - so called longhaul COVID. Fatigue, brain fog, and shortness of breath are the most common side effects that people experience. As you can see from the posts by @spinto02 @mhugs @kpatterson @lsmorgan @grammad and @dw3, you're not alone in experiencing a racing heart as well. I hope they will return to share their experiences with you.

Sara, Have you consulted a doctor about your heart issues or been to a post-COVID care clinic?

I also have been dealing with HR issues. I believe this ties back to ineffective O2 distribution due to blood issues. For me I became anemic , low hemoglobin, iron etc. correcting all that seems to have solved the HR ISSUES.

My iron has been low as well. I did an iron I fusion this week, but I can't say it's changed anything.

My care has been with my local PCP, as I live an hour away from Mayo. I haven't spoken specifically to her about the HR issue as I was hoping it would pass, only brought it up with all the other symtoms. I'm wondering if I should request any further testing to make sure there's no damage we are unaware of. We've done a chest CT to rule out PE.

Hi Sara, I am sorry you are still dealing with after effects of a Covid infection - it is good that you are following up with your PCP. It would probably be a good idea to bring the rapid heart rate episodes to their attention, explaining when this most frequently occurs.
After iron infusion, it can take a few days to feel changes - and possibly repeat infusions, or oral supplements, depending on your readings.
Is it possible for you to do report the rapid heart rate with a call or email, so they can order additional tests before you are seen?
Sue

I agree with @sueinmn that heart issues should be checked out. Since you are so close to Mayo Clinic, you may wish to look into the Post-COVID Recovery Clinic. See this discussion:
