Is the Vaccine safe for someone who has the MTHFR mutation?

Posted by bet @bet, Jul 9, 2021

Has anyone with the MTHFR gene mutation taken the COVID vaccine? If so, were there any bad side effects?

Hi Courage, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I moved your post asking about others who have the MTHFR mutation and considered the safety of the COVID vaccine to this existing discussion where you can meet @bet and @rrher who had similar questions and choose to have the vaccine.

@courage3512, have you discussed the pros and cons for yourself specifically with your doctor? A good question may also be to ask which vaccine is the better option for you.

I discussed with my doctor and she had no interest in listening to my concerns so a pro/con list was never made. Think it's time to find a new doctor 🤔 Her only feedback was to get Pfizer. Thanks for the reading material and quick response. I'll look into this!

I have a gene mutation called MTHFR. Because of this mutation I suffer with blood clots. I had a massive DVT in my left leg that cut off the blood supply to my entire leg and left me hospitalized for weeks. I'd love to hear from people who have this disorder and have got the Covid Vaccination. I just need assurance that it's safe.

Welcome @forestguide. Are you indeed a guide of forests? I love the username.

May I ask what led to your discovering you have the homozygous C677T MTHFR gene mutation?

Yes, I am a certified Forest Bathing Guide! I did the 23 n me and then turned that to genetic genie for the results

I also have the MTHFR mutation (compound heterozygous) and have had issues with blood clots and a myriad of symptoms arising from it including transient vision loss. I just want to say that about 40% of the population have ONE heterozygous mutation and that those ONE (heterozygous) mutations ‘usually’ do not cause any harm to the people who carry them, dependent on the allele mutated. In order for MTHFR to affect you, you will need to be a compound heterozygous or homozygous. This is what science is backing currently, albeit, it can change since this is not a thoroughly studied area. They have recently found that there are more than two possible mutations for MTHFR, but this is also new science and not currently well understood. So, yes, the above commenter who states that out of 350 million people vaccinated there were only 500,000 reports in VAERS of adverse events. We have no idea how many of these patients had MTHFR, if at all, or individuals with only one heterozygous mutation that would not have any concern for negative outcomes. The largest question is: how many people have gotten the vaccine who are compound heterozygous or homozygous? That is where the real danger lies for those with MTHFR. I am pro science and pro vaccine and inquired about the Pfizer, but my physician and I have discussed this and she also feels a medical exemption would be necessary for now. It boils down to this: if you have had problems with clotting and issues related to MTHFR (compound heterozygous or homozygous), then it is highly likely that clots or complications will form because of COVID infection and even possibly from vaccination. We do not know much info about the vaccine and how patients with these mutations will be affected. My guess is that not many people who know that they are MTHFR compound heterozygous or homozygous and has had prior complications have gotten the vaccine. I’m hoping that research can help us determine a way to mitigate adverse effects to receive it safely. Also, the C677T mutation and complications/mortality with COVID was more relative to those of Latino decent.

Hi everyone, I have the MTHFR mutation and was vaccinated in early January and early February (Moderna). I have had no side effects. My 22-year-old son & 13-year-old daughter (MTHFR status unknown) were both immunized without issue (daughter had Pfizer). Now, 19-year-old daughter with MTHFR is about to go get vaccinated. With the increased risk of death from COVID due to MTHFR, this was an easy call for me.

I have Mthfr (A and C). I took Moderna. Had side effects with second dose for 24 hours. After that I am fine.
I do have a question: my granddaughter (33) has mthfr; she contacted covid and had severe symptoms for two weeks, no hospital, and recovered. I want her to take one dose of vaccine but she is refusing. What can in say to convince her it is safe to take it?
