Hemorrhagic pontine stroke

Posted by eva13 @eva13, Jul 21, 2021

My husband has been intubated since 7/10/21, he developed aspiration PNA. We’re hoping to put a trache in but he still has a fever. Any thoughts? How can I get a second opinion? He’s only 37

Thanks for responding, I try to eat healthy and exercise, all my test were normal. I had two episodes of getting up from bed and not being able to walk to restroom, which I ignored, but then I had sharp pain going from my sinuses to my temple. Thinking back I had some vision issues which I ignored. According to my physician (over the phone message) if I have any more issues to contact her. I assume it is an aging issue but I was expecting for her to say lets check and see about your Blood Pressure or do this or that to your diet so that it does not get much worser. Nothing.

It sounds like you’re living a pretty healthy lifestyle and with other tests normal that’s a great sign. It’s good to keep on top of things and be aware. But if your doctor is comfortable and you’re not having any cognitive issues, then I would focus on just enjoying life. If something does come up in the future, you have a valuable base-line MRI to compare against. Now that you’re aware of your symptoms, they’re worth keeping in mind but not worth dwelling on.

This aging stuff is interesting, isn’t it? LOL. I’m at the point where things my parents and grandparents had conversations about, which at the time left me with eyes rolling, are starting to be pretty relevant! And my mom’s words, “You just wait”…I think I’ve reached the period of enlightenment!

Do you have a blood pressure cuff at home? They’re pretty inexpensive and would allow you to keep track of your blood pressure. They keep a record of your daily numbers which will be good for showing BP trends.

Are you on any medications? I’ve had similar symptoms of waking to use the bathroom and feeling very unsteady. Mine was from meds. It’s really a disturbing feeling! I’m stable now but I still will sit up at the edge of the bed just to get my bearings if I need to get up in the middle of the night.

You mentioned having some vision disturbances. What did you experience? Sometimes there are things we shouldn’t ignore, such as double vision, bursts of light, excessive floaters and things like that.
With dilation, our eye blood vessels can tell a great deal about our health.
Have you talked to your optometrist about what occurred?

I have a Blood Pressure cuff, once I get up I have all the intentions of doing it but after I take care of my husband's needs and breakfast I forget. I am planing to do that and write the numbers and then go to my Dr.
At times I felt my vision was not as it should be and last two eye checks they could not get the wright reading so I had to go back again. I was told having Cataracts started on the left eye. I understand another old age issue, but my primary care mentioned that according to my eye specialist not to decrease my Blood Pressure any lower.
Yes, we get wise as we age. I am not dwelling on this, all I am looking for someone to tell me what to do to keep my wit's a little longer. Thanks.

Hi! Just popping in to see how your husband is doing. I’m hoping all is going well since his trache removal and that he’s recovered from the pneumonia. That was a big setback but from last report he was really making progress.
Has he started doing his rehab yet?

@loribmt Thank you for checking in Lori! He is being transferred to a rehab facility today! 😊

@loribmt I’m okay. I’m not working right now so that makes things a little bit easier. I’m trying to focus on the kids and I’m trying to visit my husband as much as possible. They capped his trache yesterday so he is finally able to talk! He also regained some movement in his right leg and arm. We’re all staying positive and hoping for a full recovery. ❤️

What encouraging news! Capping the trache has to be so liberating for your husband! Even better is the progress with his arm and leg! Baby steps to recovery. I’m guessing these events are huge morale boosters for all of you!! Does he have PT daily?

Hello @eva13. I'd like to also extend a warm welcome, along with @loribmt who I can see has been sharing information with you for the past few days.

The following information may be helpful:

Reference info: aspiration PNA -"Treatment of aspiration pneumonia requires antibiotics. Many antibiotics, including clindamycin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, ampicillin/sulbactam, and imipenem, can be used. For people who have conditions that increase their risk of aspiration, doctors may stop or reduce the dosage of drugs that cause sedation."

- Good Outcome in a Patient with Massive Pontine Hemorrhage: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6703036/

You shared that your husband's fever broke and he got his trache two days ago. How is he doing today?

@amandajro Hi Amanda! I’m sorry it took me so long to respond, I just saw your comment. My husband is doing great! He got transferred to a rehab facility two days ago and it’s going great. He can finally talk and he’s starting to regain some movement on the right side. Thank you for sharing the link, I will check it out.

Hi @nsainato I’m sorry I missed this reply earlier!
Oh wow, does your story ever sound familiar. I’m supposed to be taking my BP routinely and get sidetracked by the slightest enticement! LOL Next thing I know the day has gone by and no BP check. I was taken off blood pressure pills a couple months ago and so far things are holding fairly steady…when I do remember to take a reading!

It’s good you have the cuff so you can keep track of your numbers, especially if you do have any more of those unsteady episodes. It would be interesting to know if your pressure drops during the events. Hopefully you won’t have another one!
From your comment about your eye specialist not decreasing your BP any lower, are you taking medication for blood pressure?

You also mentioned taking care of your husband. Is he having health challenges?
