How to handle dependency on therapy or the psychologist?

Posted by jonasd @jonasd, Jul 20, 2021

I am working on my depression for 2 years now, it begins with a burn out crisis of working and family relations. I found a good psychologist that’s helps me a lot, with the time with became also friends, I think that it is based on the confidence that we have.
The problem is that I’m fighting inside myself because I don’t want to depend on her help, she has stabilized boundaries. But I still hoping her attention and help when I’m alone crying with specific things that I can’t handle, and I realize that in those specific moments she never answers my messages or calls and I think that’s ok because she has a personal life.
With that ideas in my mind I can’t find the balance between counting on her help and my good emotional independence. Any idea please help!

Hi Jona, I moved your latest message to the original discussion that you started. It sounds like you're not satisfied with the therapy you are currently receiving or that you may need additional or different support. Have you talked to your therapist about your feelings of dependency on her?

You also mentioned quitting therapy sessions for a while. Should you decide to do this, do you have an alternative plan for support? Perhaps group support through NAMI as suggested in precious messages above?

Hi @deek15redpeppers,
NAMI stands for National Alliance of Mental Illness. Here is their website link for the support groups that they offer.
Are you looking to join a support group?

Here is the website for NAMI https://www.nami.org/Home
And here is the Support Group link https://www.nami.org/Support-Education/Support-Groups

This valuable resource has a lot to offer, not only to someone who may live with mental illness, but their family and friends. There should be no shame in admitting to a disorder that falls under "mental Illness". I myself prefer to call it a dis-order rather than illness.

I might be looking for an online support group. Was trying to get an appointment for some counseling, but no one in my vicinity is taking new clients. Even a telehealth therapist has nothing until October. I will have cured myself by then!
