Pain flare after Dexascan 15 min flat on back

Posted by microbe1943 @microbe1943, Jul 24, 2021

Hi, I am newly diagnosed and newly here. Age 76. 5 days on 10 mg prednisone. Helped right away, probably 80% but yesterday, there was a return of the back and shoulder and trapezius muscle tension, pain from lying on that hard surface machine for 15 min. I cannot lie on my back let alone on a hard surface for 15 min...I did but I am struggling from it. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm on 20 mg. Prednisone (tapered down from 40 mg. for GCA). I had a dexascan lately without any problems. Did you always have problems with your back? I ask because I have arm and shoulder pain from an old injury that never goes away. If the pain doesn't go away, might be best to let your doctor know. PMR is treated with prednisone at a lower dose than Giant Cell Arteritis, which requires a higher dose. Do you have any head pains, eye pains or difficulty seeing, scalp tenderness, difficulty chewing? If so, let your doctor know immediately. I have osteoporosis, and my upper back sometimes aches, especially after working on the computer a while. I've found that lying flat on a hard surface helps take the pain away (a spinal alignment exercise from Sara Meeks). All the Best.

Hello @microbe1943, I would like to add my welcome along with @colleenyoung and other members. I see from your first post earlier this month that you saw a rheumatologist and they started you on 10 mg prednisone dosage but the pain got worse when you had the Dexascan and were laying on a hard flat surface. My PMR is in remission but I am extremely uncomfortable and don't like laying on a hard flat surface. I suppose if it were more than a few minutes I might also have some pain although I don't think it would last very long.

You mentioned in your first post on July 12th that you also have type 2 diabetes and are having trouble with weight gain even though you are not eating that many calories. You might want to talk with your rheumatologist to see if he has any suggestions on the prednisone dosage to help with the pain. Be sure to report any symptoms of scalp tenderness or pain in the temple areas as this is a symptom of Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) mentioned by @tsc and is more serious.
