Looking for an app to help with what to eat for chronic kidney disease

Posted by ms9246 @ms9246, Jul 16, 2021

A good renal app. To help me with my foods, what I should have, what I can’t have, to avoid completely. I’m very new with this and I have lost tons of weight trying to figure this out. I have stage three kidney disease with my With my functions going up and down.

I’ve taken myself Off of all meds except my natural vitamins. It’s so hard because I had a C-2 through T-1 cervical fusion 4 years ago and I am always in pain. Right now I’m not even taking Tylenol for it so I can try and get my numbers up.😂

Hi @ms9246
I hope you are able to find the information on CKD diets and it is helpful. I applaud your being able to stop all of your meds to get your eGFR up. I haven’t stopped any of my meds except NSAIDS, Prednisone and OTC meds/supplements not recommended by my doctors. I do use Pulmicort steroid inhaler for Asthma and Nasilide (flunisolide) nasal spray for Sinusitis. I sometimes take Budesonide 3mg for Microscopic (Lymphocytic) Colitis, but have stopped taking Prednisone for Gout now that Uloric has stopped it and brought Uric Acid down to 2.4.
I have decided that I will not do Dialysis/Transplant if I reach Stage 5 for many reasons. They include age, very complex medical history with sensitivity and allergies to a very long list of meds which would make any benefit unlikely. I am allergic to almost every antibiotic and have had Abscesses, Cellulitus and Serous Peritonitis from strong steroids. I will see a Nephrologist at University of Michigan in August and will request to be in their conservative care program. If I was younger or still raising children I might think differently. I will follow any diet recommendations they suggest and will see what meds they want me to stop or change.

I looked up the two apps recommended Pocket Dietician and Healthy Foods. Neither is available. Do you know of an app that helps track foods.?

@zeppo, It looks like the Pocket Dietician is no longer available. I did find the Healthy Food app but it's only on the Google Play Store for android phones/tablets - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oajoo.healthyfood&hl=en_US&gl=US

Another member has mentioned using the Chronometer app - https://cronometer.com/. MyFitnessPal app is another good one. Here's a comparison of the two - https://vegfaqs.com/cronometer-vs-myfitnesspal/

Thank you so much! I’m going to do that because my doctor is not taking this seriously which I think is absolutely ridiculous.

I think I made my doctor was upset with me because I told him it was time that I saw a nephrologist. He is not taking my function numbers dropping so I did what is best for me!

The above review did not mention price. Are they offered free on trial periods only, then fees kick in does anyone know?

@ms9246 You have to be your own advocate. A general physician shouldn't be expected to know everything, and should be ready to hand off a case to a specialist when the need arises. I am sorry he feels that way, but proud of you for taking a stand!

I think they both have a free version with just the basics. I have the Chronometer app and it’s pretty good but I don’t use it much .

Good for you and don’t give it a second thought. Doctors want patients to be completely open and honest with them except if you question or disagree with them. Physicians who have such sensitive and delicate feelings shouldn’t be dealing with the public in the first place.
I think most doctors need to see a psychologist to develop better coping skills because many of them certainly can’t handle being questioned or criticized very well. The days of speaking only when spoken to are over.
I hope your nephrologist has sturdier emotions.
Take care,
Jake
