Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and blood

Posted by needtoknow @needtoknow, Feb 10, 2016

Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and tiny amounts of blood. It seems to come from the back of my throat or nose. My doctor has seen the scab but does not see anything wrong. This, to me, seems really odd. Has anyone had this problem?

The same thing has been happening to me for the past year. I have been to 3 different ENT's one said Allergies, one said surgery (I said no), and the last one said acid reflux. I've honestly lost all confidence in them ever being able to figure this out. My regular doctor had also had me try antibiotics and like others the problem went away and then came back. I decided yesterday I was just done with the doctors all together.... that's when I came across this forum and its honestly heartbreaking how many of us are having to deal with this and getting no answers. So I kept digging and I ran across something called Nasopharyngeal bursitis the crusting type. Has anyone else looked into this or asked their doctor if this could possibly be what is causing this horrid situation? I have now had one stuck up there for weeks. I get the burning feeling like its loosened and ready to come out. the minute I try to really hack it up it sticks back up there. I consistently have thick mucus building up around it that I can get to come out when I use colloidal silver nose spray, but the scab seems to be getting more and more stubborn. Whats worse is I have had to be put on Anxiety medication do to all of this. I have had 3 major major panic attacks and ended up in the ER. Just really curious about this Nasopharyngeal bursitis they say its rare... but is it really that rare? Are they misdiagnosing us because it is said to be a rare occurrence?

Guys!!!! I may have found an answer!!!!!
Look up:
Crust type of nasopharyngeal bursitis and Tornwaldt’s cyst

So far I have read that “Combined endoscopic endonasal and transoral approach with good electrocauterization is a minimally invasive and effective way of treating both types of nasopharyngeal bursitis” but I’m going to have to research other effective ways!!
Hopefully it will help!!! 💜💜

Haha I just found the same thing and posted it before I saw your comment. That’s my best guess so far!!! Definitely sounds like what I’ve been experiencing

Try doing it after a warm shower and drinking something warm. It helps to loosen mine

Also I hear nasal irrigation helps. I did it for about a week before my Ent appointment.
I have also heard it was allergies. My virtual report back from my doctor somehow led me to find about the nasopharyngeal bursitis.
So far I believe it’s the best answer!!
Now to research treatment!!
I definitely understand the panic and anxiety. Hopefully now that we possibly have an answer (always thought that I had cancer!!) it will help to stress less.
Hang in there, we are not alone!! 💜

It looks like based off what I am reading it’s as simple as cauterizing the spot. The study showed that after a 12 month follow up none of the patients had had any further issues. I don’t have insurance unfortunately and have to come out of pocket on all these specialist appointments. I’m going to see if my doctor can possibly find a ENT that will for sure look into this, test for it, and treat it.
