Constant burning throat and nausea

Posted by xcatoverx @xcatoverx, Aug 1, 2019

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to this. I’m 20 years old and have suffered from nausea and burning in my throat for several years now. I have seen two GI doctors who have tried a few different PPIs and have tested me for many things, but I continue to get worse. Currently I am diagnosed with GERD and Fructose Malabsorption. PPIs seem to help with “regular” heartburn which I would get after eating a meal, but the burning in my throat is something different. It comes out of nowhere, usually two or three hours after I have eaten something or when I wake up in the morning. It will last for 2-3 days (sometimes more) straight with severe nausea, bloating, and gas. During these spells I can barely eat anything and medicines like Gaviscon, Zantac, and Pepto don’t even touch it. Then, I will wake up the next day after having a spell and the burning will be gone, but I am left with a queasy/nauseous feeling most of the time. I have drastically changed my diet and don’t eat or drink anything acidic or irritating. I don’t have coffee, chocolate, sauces, fried foods, etc. I also don’t smoke and I am pretty underweight. Does anyone have any ideas or tips? I am so desperate for relief that I am willing to try anything.

@xcatoverx, it sounds like you are dealing with a lot and that must be so frustrating, but you’ve found a very supportive community; have you consulted a gastroenterologist about your symptoms?

Yes. I have already seen 4 GI doctors and have not been helped.

@xcatoverx Sorry for the delay in my response. I went through very similar experience as you are going through. First when did you start having issues? Have you have a Endoscope and a Colonoscopy ?

It was not until I had both of them done that they found I had H-Pylori. Plus I had an Ulcer in the Cecum of my colon. Were you ever tested for that? It is a miserable bacteria infection.
Did anyone say to eat several small meals a day? That may help some. I was told to do that.

I wish you the best..

That's okay! The burning throat and nausea started about 4 years ago, but I have had acid reflux and GI issues since birth. My symptoms have been getting progressively worse for about 2 years now. Yes, I had an endoscopy last year. It showed gastritis and esophagitis, but I was negative for H-Pylori. They said a colonoscopy wasn't needed since most of my symptoms are in my stomach.
I try to eat about 5-6 small meals a day, but lately my stomach hurts and feels so bad that I can't eat anything or very little. It's really getting frustrating. I am hoping to go to the Mayo Clinic sometime this winter...

I have had stomach problems since birth it seems. 😉 Really true.

I had burning so bad when I was in my 20s. My husband was in the Army and it was a crap shoot if you got a good doctor. The doctor prescribed Mylanta.. yeah it was once a prescription drug as was Maalox. The bottles they had were 8 ozs. He told me every time I had the burning sensation to take a swig of the Mylanta.. no measuring just drink out of the bottle. I think I drank about a bottle a day the first week. I did that for about three weeks with cutting doen on the Mylanta after that first week. I ate a bland diet too and got over the burning until the next flare. So that is what I have done when the burning has been bad over the last 40 years or so.

They recommended sleeping with my head raised.. but then that makes my back hurt. I still had the bile coming up into my throat on those times I raised the head of the bed. So I don't do it, but many get relief from it.

I had a Nissen wrap done at one time to prevent the acid. It failed.. repair failed. Undo of Nissen and repair of sliding hernia.. failed. Then I had a gastric bypass in 2014 to repair hernia.. hernia is still repaired. I just get mucus coming up and not the bile. It doesn't burn... but probably is doing damage. I cannot eat much at a time so I eat every two or three hours during the day. Nowadays I have more of a swallowing problems than an acid problem. .. achalasia, Barretts and muscle spasms.

Try your best to get the acid under control. They gastro doctors at the Mayo in Jacksonville are excellent and so are their surgeons.

Did you end up getting a diagnosis and treatment that worked for you?

Hi @jb0521 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Are you having similar symptoms? Can you share more of what your story is?

I can tell you what works for me. No eating 3-4 hours before bedtime. Elevate head of bed 4-6". No seasonings of any kind. No spicey or fatty fried foods. I only drink low acid coffee in the morning. Then it's unsweetened almond milk and lots of cold water for the rest of the day. No citrus or juices. No products with vinegar in it. No soda ever! No booze! I take pantaprozole PPI 1/2 hr before supper. Stay away from high fructose corn syrup. Hope this helps you.
ZeeGee, how are you after your SI surgery? I hope your feeling better. My wife was asking about you.

I am not sure how to use CONNECT.
I have had a throat problem for about a year.
I feel like I have a lump in my throat or phlegm that I can not bring up.
I have been to an ENT and allergist --- been scoped four times- tried nexium--montelukast - ipratropium-- flonace---all the known "cures" for phlegm. No help !
This condition started around the time after cervical surgery for a disc problem. The condition seems to go away when I sleep. As soon as I move around in the morning the "phlegm returns.
Any comments please.

I am scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy this week following digestive symptoms and a positive test for H-pylori. Did you go on antibiotics for the H, or was some other treatment recommended? I have been hesitant about taking antibiotics, but if the results of the tests this week confirm infection and if antibiotics are recommended, I will likely take them. A CT scan also recently revealed a small hiatal hernia.
