Living Dangerously - Nebulizer Cleaning

Posted by thumperguy @thumperguy, Mar 12, 2021

I marvel at the time consuming, meticulous way many, perhaps the majority, of contributors to this forum clean and sanitize nebulizers. Following the treatment session I soap and hot water “bathe” the mouthpiece then let it air dry until its next use. The tube gets no special attention except being fully disconnected from the compressor. I’ve read of some regimens aimed at sanitizing shower heads; another activity I ignore entirely. I’m closing in on 16 months free of a “flare-up” involving fever, and an antibiotic to defeat.
The lengthening periods of freedom from acute symptoms is something I attribute solely to learning about 7% saline nebulizer solution which I read about on this forum.
My comparatively minimal attention to “sanitation” may catch up with me but so far so good.

I should add that I realize many forum participants are contending with considerably more virulent pathology than I am. Don

Well Don, Following your excellent advice, I calmed down a little. I now throw all the neb & Aerobika parts into hot soapy water for a 30 minute soak, then (hot) rinse and air dry. But I have skipped sterilizing for quite a while with no ill effects. I still change out the tubing and mouthpiece frequently, most usually because I lose the little "doohickey" the propels the mist, and each of my kits comes with one mouthpiece, one mask & new tubing.
My little guys love the (washed) old tubing to fuel their toy cars, and for all kinds of imaginative play. Any suggestions what to do with all the accumulated masks?

Sue, your post(s) mention mention masks. It’s unclear to me what you’re referring to since my routine doesn’t include a “mask.”

Thanks for the response. Hope the treatment goes well for your wife. The therapist/company rep. comes this afternoon to get me fitted and demonstrate everything. I'm currently on inhaled Tobramycin for 28 days (Just finished 14 days of levofloxacim for nasty Pseudomonas bug. It is a recurring situation so we're hoping adding the vest to the neb 7% Sod. Chloride will get things under control. Blessings to you both.

Hi @thumperguy. I've been following this group since fall of 2019 when I was 8-9 months diagnosed MAC & Bronchiectasis. When they made a change in the way we get messages, etc. I got lost. Now I'm getting a weekly notice of messages. Anyhoo, My Smart vest was delivered today. The therapist comes Wednesday to train me. Any tips or questions I should ask. Thanks, and keep on thumping.

Faye, Exciting time, a spanking new percussion vest. Hey, just think, you may become known as “Thumperchik.”
This probably doesn’t rise to the level of a tip, but I have occasionally, while wearing the vest, machine running, extended both arms simultaneously above my head with fingers interlaced (kinda like a Yoga pose). It intuitively fosters the feeling that it’s doing all kinds of good. Don

Hi Jennifer. Not familiar with Coilstin. Is it inhaled? How long have you been using it? I was told my pseudo would respond to Levoflaxin--after checking sputum. he did not say about Toby.he said this regime or PICC line again. I had that back in fall of 2019. Thanks much.

Lets hold off on the new title. I'm exhausted just using the vest twice. Guess we do what gets us through--real or imagined. I may try the arms up move and who knows what else. Thanks.

Each complete "new kit" I get with tubing, cup, mouthpiece, etc contains a mask for those who cannot use the mouthpiece, it goes over nose and mouth - I only use the tubing, neb cup and mouthpiece and the masks pile up, even after giving several to my daughter and niece for the "littles" to use

I had a lot of pari nebulizer cups and tubing accumulated over the 10+ years I have been using saline but I only have one set left. For the first time I am going to have to purchase a set. Where do you get your nebulizing cup and tubing sets? Thank you.
